F1 driver rankings 'championship' standings

We thought we'd kick off the week sharing something a bit different with you, taking a quick look at the championship standings based on Edd Straw's driver rankings after each grand prix.

Throughout the season we dish out points based on the current F1 system (25 for a win etc) to the top 10 drivers in Edd's rankings. It's just a fun additional curiosity we like to track. Although as Edd explains below, he tries not to look at it!

EDD SAYS: "The driver rankings challenge is always a difficult one. And partly because of that, I avoid looking at such combined rankings or the points 'championship' in case they inadvertently influence ongoing ranking.

"The standard of F1 drivers is so high that they are all operating at what is objectively a seriously good level. And that inevitably means the middle of the pack in terms of a given weekend, between the obvious standouts and the ones that have usually made big errors or consistently lacked pace, is incredibly condensed in terms of how well they have performed.

"But the biggest thing is how small the difference really is between, say, Max Verstappen doing extraordinary things and, for example, Lance Stroll, who is a hugely capable driver but in F1 terms, thanks to the aggregation of relatively small differences, nowhere near his level in output and results terms."
