Songs of Summer: Fan Favorites (Ep. 17)

For us in the northern hemisphere, the heat of summer has been hard to avoid this year. So, I thought we'd join the party with our community's favorite 'Songs of Summer'. These are songs that either speak of summer directly or somehow spark personal memories of summers past. I included 10 songs this time. I hope you enjoy!

YouTube Playlist has the songs in order of our countdown: https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLO0n3LrUjxKpyuTmxW9zHd3arRFgfBndK

Songs of Summer: Fan Favorites (Ep. 17)

Comments

Hilarious reaction to the buzzing and the satisfaction of it getting swatted. I also have a fun bee story (though I'm not allergic). Was like 10 years old and I was drinking from a water fountain at a local state park. A yellow jacket landed on my stomach, and of course I swatted at it and it ended up flying up my nose and stinging me. Only partially blocked my airways luckily. That was 30 years ago, and I still freak out anytime something flies near my head.

Would love to see more from The Kinks…. I submitted Summers Gone, from Word of Mouth, but was denied…

Doug, you really need to listen to more of The Kinks. Ray Davies is a Great lyricist. My favorite British Invasion band. Check out: Arthur, Village Green Preservation Society, Schoolboy’s in Disgrace, Muswell Hillbillies… A very British outlook in his lyrics… So many great songs. God Save The Kinks!

I'm amused that each of the first two pieces you featured—about as far from one another as you could imagine, "Rock Lobster" and the Vivaldi—nevertheless BOTH featured passages with chromatic descents down nearly a whole octave...and rather similar, too!

When I first decided that I wanted to be a drummer, I used two pens and banged on a leather attache case for my drum (in the corner, I could get a SNAP! that could be my snare drum, and worked my way inward as I wanted toms or a bass drum). For a "cymbal," I used one of those wire racks that people used to store records in, with rows or trapezoidal pieces of stiff wire soldered to a sturdier metal frame. It was Ringo who made me want to play the drums, but "Summer in the City" was the first song I ever played along with on that rig. Thanks Nick and Megan for getting Cincinnati's own Isley Brothers into the playlist! I think the buzzing in "Grantchester Meadows" is meant to be a fly. Also, don't forget that--whatever it is--it ends up roundly swatted at the end. And, of course, thank you, Doug. You're the one that makes it all fun!

Perfect beers for ME in summer are a regular lager or a good pilsner. I really don't do citrus or fruitiness in my beers, thank you -- but I never begrudge anyone their favorite beer/ale. One of humankind's greatest inventions! And thanks for the memories in this vid!

I'm so happy you played The B-52's! As Mark_Fortman says, it was some of the vocals and how they'd "finally caught up to Yoko" (his words) that Lennon liked about this song, apparently. We just saw the B's on their final tour here in ATL in January, and they ended the night with this song and a LOT of confetti. It was a fantastic time and a wild send-off to so many decades of fun with this band.

Boring Postcards

It would be nice if Doug would look at the Beatles/Kinks ("Face to Face" is worth a look) to see what (if any) seeds were sown for Progressive Rock. There could be a nice progression to XTC. . .

What a pleasure: you reacted to most of the songs that I picked from the list. Too cool.

John Lennon was inspired by "Rock Lobster" because the female singers sounded like Yoko.

Fort-Man

Some great reactions here. I probably reacted the same way when I first heard Rock Lobster, but came to enjoy their retro sound. You have to love John Entwhistles's low vocals on Summertime Blues - I love your description of the Who's sound. I am so glad that Summer Breeze was included. It's a sweet, chill cover and I agree - I like it better than the original. Thank you for that, Megan! Thank you, Doug for great reactions to songs that evoke bright summer memories. Oh, sorry about the bees...

Hey Doug, the Rock Lobster video you presented is a sync of the studio song The B-52"s were one of the first new wave dance rock bands They were very quirky, but so much fun! I saw them on their "farewell" tour awhile back.

Gerard Dion

Nice way to remember these songs. I was just a kid then.

Good memories......dk

So enjoyable!

Pam Norris

Great video, much to enjoy here. The Isley Brothers makes the show for me.

Another singer with a high singing voice/low speaking voice is Art Garfunkel. Now that is a huge difference - speaks bass, sings falsetto I think

Chris Ramsbottom

Great mix of genres here!

Ruth James

I have to figure out how Discord works.. LOL
