In Progress: Writing a New Prog Song | Behind the Score (Ep. 46)

I really enjoyed creating this video for y'all...and I hope you like it.

Go behind the scenes with me to take a look at my progress so far into the writing of a new progressive rock song that I'm calling 'Walk Through the Stone'.

I hope you enjoy!

I hope you find the inspiration to continue working on this, Doug. It's really great!

Robert Thornton

Getting good Liquid Tension Experiment vibes with the earlier piano parts. Bassline sounds right in Tony Levin’s wheelhouse. The last few sections were prog supreme. I’m fully sold! The inspiration clearly shines through! I think that one CMm7/Db chord fits into the Lydian #6 scale (2nd mode of C Neapolitan Minor)

Absolute gold! Thank you for the insight. This is very inspiring!!!

Thank you for that look behind the curtain, Doug. I hear so much potential in what you have done and look forward to where it all goes. It's great to see that you are you composing again and taking a step outside of what you have done in the past. Have fun with it!

yes...those things happen...once I'm kind of 'mentally in the piece', ideas start floating to the surface!

that option is in the view menu...panoramic...even older versions of sibelius should have that option.

Thank you, Doug! I really liked everything I heard tonight, and it was fascinating to see how you're developing your ideas. What really caught my attention was how you want to convey emotion, and you accomplish that (very successfully, to my ear) by using your knowledge of the ways that music works to make it happen. You mentioned that you were thinking of pulling out the two measures of Dbmaj7 in your instrumental section. I kind of hope you don't do that. First of all, if you're thinking this piece will clock in at (maybe) over twenty minutes, I'm not sure if two measures is going to make anyone say "Gee, that piece was wonderful, but if those two measures were cut out, it wouldn't go on for so long!" Also, and more importantly, as I hear it, that little bit makes your chromatic ascension all the more dramatic. Also, a question: As a person who writes prose from time to time, I find that when I'm sitting and writing, ideas start to flow. More often than not, these are things that wouldn't enter my mind under purely normal circumstances. Does this happen to you when you're writing music?

Appreciate looking at your work in progress; there are things we can glean that we might not when it's completed. What version of Sibelius? I don't think my version has that long scroll view option. (Maybe I need a second monitor?)

Thanks for sharing this with us Doug! Informative as always, but also brave as an artist to share your work in progress. As a songwriter, I love the advice "let the pie cool." I can't wait to hear the finished product!

Thanks for letting us in on the process....very cool.....dk

So far, so good. Have you considered using a MIDI connection from your piano to your computer to program the drums? It's a lot more intuitive for me to play right drum at the right dynamic using my synthesizer's keys.
