Big Big Train: The Underfall Yard | Extended Play Lounge Episode 58

For our last Extended Play Lounge episode of 2023, I'm pleased to present my review of The Underfall Yard by Big Big Train. This is an album that I have and that I've played, but I've never "read-in" on the songs and listened all in order until now. And, I thoroughly enjoyed it!

If you're a fan of classic progressive rock, I know you'll enjoy this album.

Thanks for all your support this year! I can't wait to get started again in the new year.

Listening once again to this excellent album. I tend to do a lot of listening at work, often just on my smartphone...which is not the greatest sound quality to honour some of the artists you feature! Today I have a Bluetooth stereo speaker, and boy is this record opening up even further to me. I'll be ordering up some BBT later. The opener "Evening Star" is a truly epic first track. ~another aside from that; Evening Star was the final steam locomotive to be built in Britain, rolling out of Swindon's works in 1960, only eight years before steam was totally withdrawn from our railways. A freight engine, it was "honoured" by being decorated in the full lined-out green livery of the Great Western Railway. It still exists, in our National Railway Museum.* Boring railway history story ends. Keep up the good work Doug.

Second time watching and listening to this. Not overly familiar with BBT, but liking what I've heard so far. Genesis should maybe have signed up Mr Longdon as vocalist for their farewell tour? Such a sad loss. I live the inclusion of Dave Gregory on the album- Dave is from Swindon, which was home to the locomotive works of the Great Western Railway, thus inextricably linked to Brunel and the railway. There's a beautifully elegiac song by XTC called "Red Brick Dreams" which is about the end of the steam era in Swindon.

Dave Gregory had been long time guitarist of the band XTC, another very, very English band in the way they portrait people and things.

Anderson Davies

I would like to mention, that guest musician Dave Gregory later would become a constant member getting to play the the more tricky parts.
