Behind the Score: Star Trek Themes | Episode 52

It's only 'logical' that we take a look at some iconic Star Trek themes in this series. Today, we're listening to the original series theme, the Next Generation theme, and the theme from the movie reboot from 2009. I hope you enjoy!

Back in the 60s, NBC asked Gene Roddenberry to provide them with a Western. He gave them a science fiction show instead. NBC said, okay, you can do your space show, but you have to put a fistfight in every episode. And while you're at it, it sure would be great if you could put in some romance--especially if you want to...you know...stay on the air. In spite of that, they still managed to tell some good science fiction stories over those three seasons. You were clearly having a lot of fun with this one, so I can't help but love it. Usually, your cursor has a lovely glow around it, but I couldn't see it at all in this one. That would have been a help keeping track with some of these iffy scores. Thanks, as always, Doug. I always enjoy watching you!

As a lifelong Star Trek fan I really enjoyed this. Just want to mention that, since you haven't got into Voyager - neither did I, but it got better and better, and you should really catch up with the final seasons (probably starting in season 4) 🙂

I've half-heard this long time ago. I had a work colleague many years back, early 1980s, who was a great admirer of Goldsmith. I might throw in a good word for Hans Zimmer, in the general category of film scores, but he's managed perfectly well without it for many a year.

Just a note: Goldsmith premiered that "Next Generation" theme in the original Star Trek motion picture (1979). If I remember correctly, it was a tad slower. . .
