It was the type of thing I was originally drawn to when I first got into writing seriously (I was in fact big on Bret Easton Ellis actually as a teenager lol). I'm chuuni at heart at the end of the day so naturally person vs person just became my bread and butter, but when it comes to subplots I'll often look for ways to integrate that kind of thing. Love that feeling where the backdrop is just utterly tense or hostile in some way, yeah especially when it compounds with a character flaw like that.

2024-12-26 17:50:01 +0000 UTCFor whatever reason, I really like stories where the main conflict is based on person vs nature, but it's in some way that's unique to the main character. Like in Saya No Uta, where for most of the story, only Fuminori perceives the world the way he does. The other examples I can think of off the top of my head are from western media. Groundhog Day, American Psycho and Cast Away come to mind. There's the normal world most people experience, and there's this individualized way the setting tortures the main character, because of circumstance or their mind just being messed up.
