Askelaad just saw the way to get everything he had been trying to do all at once, his whole life was based on revenge against the Danes so he killed the king to get his revenge, set up a good king so the next generation wouldn’t suffer like he had, saved his people, and lifted the burden of hate from himself and from Thorfinn which prevents Thorfinn from living his life the same way Askelaad had, consumed by hate. He lost all his men and did right by the ones that survived so he decided to do the right thing for once, rather than the selfish thing as he always had.

2022-05-25 01:14:13 +0000 UTCI've always interpreted Lucius as not having planned for Canute to kill him ''all along'' but rather an ''in the moment'' plan once the king gave him the ultimatum of choosing between the prince or wales, the small look he gave Canute signaling that he chose to save both of them and that he finally for the first time in his life found someone who would make him want to serve them as their vassal and die for them (as referenced in an earlier episode, and following his mothers ideology of serving a rightful king/hero). btw I have not read the manga or watched anything beyond this episode this is just my personal interpretation. loved the reactions tho can't wait for the next season.
