Nice explanation. And I would like to add that its a lot of timelines than a loop. But ofc a loop.. but there's a progress every single time.. hard to explain.. but yeah ofc it's the story of the advancing titan..

I just read it and nothing was spoiled, in fact your point about eren looking in the mirror just gave that scene so much extra meaning

well people back in 2019 in AOT subreddits did read all that to understand it and ironically it doesnt even hint or spoil any future events, its just the Length of it looks scary and too long that it may appear as a spoiler
2022-09-28 08:06:59 +0000 UTC
trust me its long because the author himself built it up for 11 years and all of the foreshadowings and everything throughout the series is paying off now, Its not a spoiler at all, Just the explanation of the mechanics with no hint or spoiler for futfuture episodes and the show does nothing to explain it afterwards because the author doesnt do handholding for its viewers much like GOT author or Dark writers and trusts his viewers to connect all the dots and understand it...

It's a very insightful comment and I might come back to it and read it in full after the series ends but reading this now feels like a spoiler. Even if the show doesn't explain it clearly later on, I believe I could still figure out some of these things on my own, which is much more rewarding than having it all explained to me by someone else. I understand where you're coming from, but I believe this comment should be read only after finishing the show.

Haha, kind of you, since all i hard to do was combine two paras of explanation from a YT video and post it here, hardly took 3 minutes but thank for your concern! 😁

I've been preparing this comment for quite some time to explain what happened here. Trust me, this is worth reading and ofc, without spoilers (also, there will not be any other explanation in the following episodes up until the end so...).
Two thousand years ago, the titans were born from the powers of Ymir and in the previous episode, Zeke told us that she is a slave of the royal family for unknown reasons (at least for now). In this episode, Grisha tells us that the attack titan was created to fight the king's self-righteousness and that Frieda (the royal family) was unaware of it. In other words, Ymir would have created the attack titan behind the back of the royal family.
We know that each primordial can see the memories of its predecessors (Porco seeing Marcel's memories or Armin with Bertholdt). But, in this episode, we learned that the attack titan has the power to read the memories of its future holders. This power, only Eren discovered it... When? How?. The response is simple: by mistake. When Eren kissed Historia's hand, he saw his father killing the royal family but he also saw his father chatting with Zeke and his future self.
The power of the attack titan is not to see the future directly but simply to observe the memories of the next holder if this one accepts it. For example, at the end of the episode, Grisha does not see Zeke, he sees himself, facing Zeke, from Eren's point of view. You can see Eren as a camera where he can choose, whenever he wants, to share his current vision to his predecessors. Then, to "know" the future, he has to share his vision to the predecessors and then see in Grisha's memories what's going to happen.
There can only be one future (obviously). So when Eren decided to share his memories, he writes history, and the future cannot change anymore, otherwise his memories could not be transmitted to others and history would change. It's fate.
When Eren shows his memories, he transmits them to all his predecessors simultaneously. Now you know why Eren was saying "TATAKAE" in front of the mirror: he was actually sharing his memories and using the mirror so that his predecessors can see him.
Try to imagine: the first person gets the attack titan two thousand years ago and sees Eren telling him "fight, if you don't fight, you can't win". Apart from this person, all those who inherited this titan thought they were seeing the memories of the first owner, when in fact, they were seeing the memories of the last owner of this titan.
Exactly, Eren must be the last attack titan, because if there is a new one, he could share is memories to change history and that is not possible.
To be precise, Grisha was also aware of the impact of the future on his time. When Eren shared his memories, by "mistake", he revealed the presence of Zeke. From this moment, Grisha start understanding the power of the attack titan.
Another thing: Now, we know why Eren Kruger said "To save Mikasa, Armin, and everyone else, you must see it through.". In fact, everyone who had the attack titan knew they had to save Mikasa and Armin, but they didn't know it was future memories.
-------> To be clear: the moment the attack titan was created by Ymir, the whole story was written and could not be changed. To understand how the story is written, you have to admit that the story is written from the end.
Okay, so Eren wants freedom for him and his friends. When he thinks he got that freedom, he shares his memories and the past can't change. In fact: two thousand years of history has been written at that exact moment. Inevitably, we are going to the future that Eren saw, and no one can change a thing.
If for example, Eren wanted to be a pizza maker (yeah...), the attack titan goal would not be to fight the king's self-righteousness, but to make pizza and the history would have been different. That's because Eren wants freedom that every holder of the attack titan wanted freedom as well.
Eren Kruger told us on the wall that Grisha was "chosen" to have the attack titan. In fact, this titan is transmitted each time to someone revolutionary. Indeed, if someone revolutionary has the attack titan, he will want to bequeath it to someone who shares his revolutionary ideas and that's how the titan has travelled through history to "fight" the royal line.
It's funny to see that Zeke thought that Eren was being manipulated by his father, when we learn that Eren was manipulating two thousand years of history ^^.
The story is actually a loop:
Grisha steals the founding titan -> Grisha gives both titans to Eren -> Eren can attack Marley -> He can "kidnap" Zeke -> they can "touch" each other -> they can travel in Grisha's memory -> Eren can "contact" Grisha through memories and tell him to steal the founding titan -> ... (loop)
This is the ultimate paradox of Attack on Titan. You can't find a beginning to the story except from the end.
Another paradox:
Eren ordered Grisha to spare Rod Reiss -> So he's going to look for his daughter (Historia) -> he will get killed by her -> She will become the new Queen of Eldia -> Eren will kiss her hand for the presentation of survey corps medals -> So he can look at his father's memories and see himself ordering to Grisha to spare Rod Reiss -> ... (loop)
Here is my the other point:
When Zeke wanted to use his scream, Eren said "Wait!". At first sight, we can think that Eren hesitates and does not want to lose the people dear to him (Pixis for example). It's not that at all. Eren tells him to wait a second, so that Falco, his brother (Colt) and Gabi can arrive and do their dialogue. Once Zeke uses his scream, he orders Falco to "defend" Eren. That's what allows Eren's run. Also, without that little second, Gabi wouldn't be there and couldn't shoot Eren.
If you did not know, the reason Grisha let Rod Reiss live while killing the royals was so that he can raise Historia leading up to the moment where Eren holds her hand and sees everything.
It was more to prove Historia's royal bloodline because if Rod had died there, no one would ever know or believe she was, it would be meaningless. And of course, once Rod is gone, she'd take the crown and things would lead up to Eren kissing her hand and unlocking the memories.
So in order to avoid any confusion regarding the time travel mechanics, I will break down what type of Time travel we're dealing with here.
AOT operates by a particular type of time travel where it's almost impossible to change the past even if you somehow go back in time. And any change that you tried to cause was always meant to happen in the overall timeline. Here time is a fixed circle, not a stream. We may see Eren meddle in the past but that was always meant to happen.
The Attack Titan's ability is to receive the memories of its future inheritors. This was hinted when Kruger mentioned Mikasa and Armin towards the end of S3. Keep in mind, they can only view these memories but can't interact with them. So how was Eren able to meddle in the past?
Well, he had 3 perfect conditions:
He had the ability of the Attack Titan
The ability of the Founding Titan
He was also in contact with someone with royal blood AKA Zeke.
After Zeke tapped Eren's head, they were able to view Grisha's past memories with Eren using the power of the coordinate. They were freely able to view the past as if it were through a one way mirror.
Now if Eren had any other Titan other than the Attack Titan, he would only be able to look. But since Attack Titan can see forward in time, Grisha can use this to see Eren's recollection of the same event that he's currently experiencing in real time.
So this mean that whenever Grisha can see or hear Eren, he's actually recieving a brief future memory from Eren's POV where he can see out of his eyes and hear his words. That means he is seeing himself from a 3rd perspective. Then if he responds, his response is simply part of the memory that Eren/Zeke are viewing, allowing for a two way communication through time.
Also Note that everytime, Grisha sees Zeke, Eren is always standing behind his dad. So whenever Grisha sees Zeke, it is from actually due to the memories from Eren's POV.

Nice episode, nice reaction. It is also my favourite episode of the show, the reveal of the ability is just insane.

yes AOT is a masterpiece bro

yeap, i rank this show as my best anime watched when Kruger tell Grisha about Mikasa and Armin
2022-09-27 06:00:08 +0000 UTC
i will also give it to grisha as it was his last mvp, hands down eren will be the next
2022-09-27 05:57:52 +0000 UTC
we saw grisha hugging zeke BUT from grisha side, he was hugging the air, he saw zeke as eren let him see zeke mentally
2022-09-27 05:56:02 +0000 UTC
so the attack titan power is the last inheritor (eren) giving the previous inheritors (grisha, kruger) to see the future they should and follow the plan to lead to the end of the world.
2022-09-27 05:54:42 +0000 UTC
its not physical and mental together. cause it was eren that let grisha saw zeke was infront of him through the attack titan power. so to be real grisha was hugging the air from his perspective. and the last word "please stop eren" is when grisha kill the founding tiitan then eren just let he see all the future.. so he want to stop eren. i think i saw a line when i first watch this ep is from grisha "why you not letting me see through it all". so this is why grisha want to stop eren.

It's cool that you like those episodes with more dialogue and a slower pace, so you can digest things more easily. For me it was the oppossite when this season was airing: I loved all the actions and cool stuff. That's why I loved so much the past episode and kinda got bored with this one, cause I wanted even more action, practically. But now I see more in detailed this episode and enjoyed it even more now.

In the very 1st scene in the 1st episode, Eren sees the future memories

We get the hint at Eren seeing the future when he kisses Historias hand at the end of season 3.

Eren's special power is not to manipulate the past, only to send memories to his past inheritors. But because he visited grisha's memories with zeke, eren was basically "streaming" his vision and audio to grisha to that exact moment of the time they were at in memory, simulating that he was himself there.
Grisha got the memories from Eren, which means he saw what Eren saw. For example, when grisha picked up the key and "looked at eren", actually he saw himself in the third person because Eren was looking at him while transfering his memories to him.
Also explains why Grisha started talking "zeke" in his dreams and woke up. Because Eren was looking at Grisha's photo of Zeke and Dina, thought about them, and then it seems like by mistake, Eren sent his memories to Grisha who was sleeping.

If you are confused I recommend reading some comments from this episode and the last there are many that explain what happened in the episode without spoilers and just using context from the episode itself
1. Eren Kruger at the end of season 3 told Grisha to save Armin and Mikasa which was our first glimpse of the Attack titan ability
2 . The attack titans ability works by a Current user sending their own memories into a past Attack Titan user including themselves and that is how they see the future, so it only snip bits not the full future
3. While Eren and Zeke could not physically interact with the past (the hug is just weird) Grisha Could see Zeke by looking at the memories Eren is having right then (I know a bit confusing) So Grisha was seeing each even twice, once through his own eyes and once through Eren's Eyes that's why he only saw Zeke because Eren can't look at himself

grisha could see zeke through erens eyes as eren was standing behind grisha facing zeke. Grisha knew he was there and so he hugged the outline of zekes body, the series just makes it look like hes actually hugging zeke but its more the outline of him

grisha still injected eren because after he found about abut carlas death he just didnt have any purpose left and that coinciding with the 13 year curse he didnt have much choice

Okay to answer three things you were questioning. First, Falco didn't see Reiner's future memories when he was in the trenches. He just dreamt about the Scouts, saying stuff like flying around with swords. It wasn't even in the manga and I heard Isayama wanted them to add it for fun. Second, Eren and Zeke couldn't physically affect the past, they were just there in Grisha's mind. Although it is an inconsistency with Grisha hugging Zeke. That never made sense and like I said, it was probably an inconsistency since they weren't supposed to actually be there physically. And third, the Attack Titan's powers are that a future inheritor can send any of their own memories to past inheritors as they please (including themselves in the past). It's not like past inheritors can see the whole future, it's that they can only see whatever memories a future inheritor purposefully sends them. They elaborate a little bit more next episode.

If you rewatch the episode, notice every time Grisha “sees” Zeke, Eren is not in the same shot. In other words, Grisha is only able to perceive Zeke through Eren’s memories (Attack Titan’s special trait is it’s user can glimpse into the memories of future inheritors). Ironically, Zeke trying to save Eren by using the Founding Titan’s powers and showing Eren Grisha’s memories is the only reason Eren was able to manipulate Grisha into doing what he wanted. Eren also being in possession of the founding Titan (which can erase/alter memories etc.) allows him to be selective about which memories Grisha can see as well. One thing I found kind of interesting is that even though Grisha asks Zeke to stop Eren, he still proceeds from this point to feed himself to Eren. I interpreted that as him knowing kid Eren is mostly ignorant of all this and wants him to have this power so he doesn’t die in the attack of the walls.
