As you'll have probably noticed from this week's Daft Souls, I'm really not happy with the way Nintendo have handled the situations that have unfolded around Tomodachi Life. You are truly a noble spirit, Matt. This move on Nintendo's part is hardly surprising, yet as you note, almost tragic and certainly disturbing. I think you might expect this after the way they handled past titles like Fire Emblem: Awakening. As I played (and loved) that game, I did not even think twice about the fact that the avatar is prohibited from forming highest-level relationships with same-sex partners - that was understandable, since as you note, having children was woven into the plot. But what stopped me dead in my tracks, some 80-hrs later, was the way in which the male avatar was made out to be vocally outright homophobic as a form of "humour", by the way he was made to handle "ronic" homosexuality (which is still homophobic) with people like Igor. Last I checked, the last thing a game designer wants is to have the player giving not a shit about the protagonist. I now struggle to get back into that game, and feel like my invested time in it has been permanently ruined. I repeat, my problem is not so much that I was not able to have a gay lover, but rather, that my own avatar did his best to alienate me: exactly your point re: social commentary. I was going to buy Tomodachi Life, but I no longer will. Thank you so much Matt!
