Stay Alive

Chapter 94 – The Gunfire

Snow wasn’t something that would stop Alan from finding the place Lee had once called his own during these chaotic times. Right now, more than anything, he just wanted to find them—and fix his radio so he could return home.

They had made significant progress in the past few hours, reaching a town Alan wanted to avoid at all costs. But knowing that Lee’s group might be there, they decided to take a chance and check it out.

“Margaret, slow down,” Alan called out. He had climbed into the back of the truck and was scanning the surroundings from his elevated position.

Alan’s eyes could see farther and sharper than those of most people. As he looked from house to house, he realized this place had already been looted.

On the maps he had studied, there was a prison marked nearby—and that’s exactly where they were headed, though a part of him feared that Lilly’s friends wouldn’t be there anymore.

The weather had been acting strangely, but as they continued forward, a sudden burst of gunfire echoed in the distance, immediately putting the entire group on alert.

“Quick! Head in that direction—full speed!”

Moments before the gunfire, Lee’s group had been searching for supplies after fleeing the shelter that was overrun by the infected. The exhaustion was visible on their faces, something that was deeply worrying.

Everyone had lost loved ones, and the will to go on was hanging by a thread. But the desire to survive—for those who hadn’t made it—was even stronger. That was what kept them going.

“We haven’t found much food, and I haven’t seen anything to hunt either,” Kenny complained aloud as he walked beside Lee, who was scanning the area.

Lee had to be the one to remain composed. It wasn’t something he wanted, but it was what everyone else needed.

“Things will get better. We could try going into the forest now.”

“Then I better take a look right away,” Kenny said, just about to head out when he suddenly heard footsteps coming from the far end of the street.

Lee noticed too—just in time for bullets to rain down on them. They dove behind an abandoned car for cover.

Bang! Bang! Bang!

“Damn it, take cover!”

Taken by surprise like that, they had no choice but to hide. But then, others inside the houses began returning fire.

“Is everyone okay?” Kenny yelled as he pressed himself against a tree, waiting for the bullets to stop.

“Who the hell are these people?”

“Stay there—don’t move!”

Bang! Bang! Bang!

The attackers were getting closer, and Lee knew that if they lost any more ground, they’d be dead before they had a chance to react. They needed to return fire—but the sheer volume of bullets pouring down on them made it nearly impossible.

Then, from the opposite end of the street, a black pickup truck came speeding in. From that distance, gunfire erupted—aimed at the people attacking Lee’s group.

“Now who the hell are they?” Kenny asked, completely confused.

Lee looked toward Alan, who was already advancing toward the enemy, and said, “I have no idea—but they’re helping us. Fire back!”

Bang! Bang! Bang!

Boom!

“Come on! Fire!”
