Art Update: Jukarya and Junky

In our initial demo we debuted the Jukarya and Cyberia, along with our two female characters Everie and Elsie. This Art update is focused on Jukarya and its concepts. We wanted the beginning of the journey to feel appropriate for a scrappy young adventurer, and having them have to dig around junk to try and get what they needed felt right for the character.

You may notice that the concept for both the character and the initial starting area looks very different than what you saw in the demo. Initially when we had been testing out what the area will look like we realized that the initial sketch wasn't working for what we were trying to do. 

Also having story with Everie as a droid who was thrown away, this type of planet felt very appropriate for the setup. Having the player go throw a small quest to familiarize yourself with how the game will work and also getting the player to help Everie in the process felt right. The initial design of the area with Everie was completely different as we were still trying to define the characters and the art style. 

Though this concept wasn’t bad, it didn’t fit the style of the game we were going for so after some changes we got closer to the final concept. Both the design of the character and the layout of the area changed entirely to what you see in the demo.

Junky was definitely one of the more interesting additions to the game. From the onset he was envisioned as a bit of a greasy old man who found himself stuck on the waste world, and he embraced the lifestyle fully. His collection of various “trinkets” was something the artist felt inspired to do, and his design was meant to reflect an old perverted man who has his goofy side.

Judging by patron reaction however, we’re definitely going to be included some more quests involving him in a later update, so for you Junky fans rest assured you will be getting more time to hang out with your favorite junk trader in the near future.
