I mean yeah I feel sorry for David he was cursed and he just wanted to get rid of that curse

Rick Baker is a fucking effects God. Stan Winston idolized this man that's how good he is. The man who created the Alien Queen and Predator idolized this man.

Really surprised by your reaction to this one in a way! Perhaps its impact has faded in time, but when the movie was released, it was truly innovative and audiences did know what to expect in the sense that John Landis who directed it was known as a comedy movie director and it was marketed as a horror comedy. It took inspiration from the original Werewolf movies of Universal (The Wolfman etc.) in terms of the tropes of a remote village under the thrall of a werewolf. It's innovations were in transplanting a werewolf story into a modern city setting for the first time in a major movie, its Oscar-winning special effects and werewolf transformation (no jump cut/dissolves to achieve it), and blending tongue-in-cheek black comedy with gore and truly scary horror scenes. If that hasn't changed your view, it's worth knowing that Edgar Wright (director of Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz) and Simon Pegg (star of the same) are massive fans of this movie and used it as one of the inspirations for their movie trilogy. Michael Jackson loved it so much that he hired the director and makeup effects team to make his iconic music video Thriller. I think you should go back and watch it again some time and see if it has grown on you! :)

Fantastic video lads, I must say I really do envy you seeing these films for the first time. I so wish I could go back & remember seeing this film in particular, albeit I was a kid and it absolutely terrified me.

As fans of practical effects I'm surprised you didn't comment on the change scene. That's my most vivid memory from watching this movie as a child. I think it's got to be one of the best scenes of a werewolf change that there is.

Some context: John Landis wrote this in 1970 but was unable to get it made for a decade. By that time he had become very bankable as a hugely successful comedy director, having made both THE BLUES BROTHERS and NATIONAL LAMPOON'S ANIMAL HOUSE, the latter holding the title of most successful comedy ever made for several years. While you guys seemed to find the humor here a bit off-putting, some critics found this movie's horror off-putting as they were expecting more of a light-hearted spoof. This was still a significant box office hit for Landis. It helped start the trend of comedy-horror that found a lot of success in this decade with movies like GREMLINS, RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD, EVIL DEAD II, RE-ANIMATOR and others. The effects are obviously a stand-out. FX genius Rick Baker was working on another werewolf film, THE HOWLING, directed by Landis' friend Joe Dante, when Landis called him and reminded him he'd promised to do his film years earlier as soon as he got funding. Baker reluctantly quit HOWLING but that movie's effects were taken over by another FX genius, Rob Bottin, whose work you just watched in THE THING. Weirdly, two of the most successful and acclaimed werewolf movies ever came out just a few months apart. Michael Jackson was so impressed by this film that he hired Landis to write and direct the video for his song "Thriller," which ended up being a 14 minute short film and one of the greatest and most famous music videos ever. In 1997 people who had nothing to do with this film made a sequel, AN AMERICAN WEREWOLF IN PARIS. Under no circumstances should you watch this film.

I have always preferred The Howling directed by Joe Dante, released also in 1981. Great makeup special effects by Rob Bottin.

I LOVE this movie. Every time I watch it the jump scares still get me. But I can understand Shauns point of veiw on it not being dramatic enough. Maybe it's because John Landis is a comedy director. Loved the reaction and your thoughts on it๐Ÿ˜ƒ.

Totally understand the reaction. The juxtaposing of comedy and horror is a delicate balance. The film in enjoyable, but it does bounce back and forth.
