Our Fourth Foreign Film Reaction is the largely recommended Italian horror film Suspiria (1977). Do we think it lives up to the hype?

Suspiria (1977) MOVIE REACTION! FIRST TIME WATCHING!!

Comments

“Inferno” (1980) is the sequel to “Suspiria”(1977).

Would you do the 2018 remake? I found the original to be much too stylized, but the new one is really good. Its still weird as hell, but I found it much more enjoyable.

Kelly Howard

I saw this film eons ago. Found it unconvincing. I forgot it had Udo Kier in it. Which then reminded me of two other films he was in..... the first was Flesh for Frankenstein 1973 dir Paul Morrissey - who worked with Warhol. It is quite ludicrous and mixes horror with humour and there is a 3D version which I saw at the NFT. Done with the most deliberate effect. So maybe you could in the future gave a 3D review season! and include this...Not sure what tech you are viewing on but there are ways to view 3D on home systems... The other is from 2000 Shadow of the Vampire dir Merhige which you may also know. Which is great fun to watch. On a change of subject I recently saw Snowtown (Snowtown Murders )2011 Dir Kurzel. I found this film unsettling and with a constant sense of menace. Brilliantly sustained by the lead actor. Apologies if you have seen it, but if not, well worth considering. Looking forward to seeing your responses to City of God. Fine choice.

Yeah didn’t like the movie at all..

It’s not for me at all but I agree with Shaun that I like that it’s a horror about witches. It’s by far the only one but it’s not as prolific a topic as slashers, vampires, werewolves etc. There’s some artistry to it but I don’t think it’s anywhere near deserving of all of the praise that’s heaped upon it. Another great video though guys. You two never fail to make me laugh!

The remake of Suspiria is a very good horror movie in my opinion. For me I was engaged and engrossed in the plot. Quentin Tarantino liked it alot and even cried after watching it. "I showed it to Quentin Tarantino. We’ve been friends since our jury duty at the Venice Film Festival. I was nervous but eager to hear his advice. We saw it at his place and his reaction warmed me. He was enthusiastic about it, in the end he was crying and hugged me......"

Honestly you guys might like the remake. It’s Tilda Swinton and Dakota Johnson (in possibly the worst wig ever put to film...). They play it completely straight and actually integrate the dancing of the academy in some really cool ways. I basically feel like the original is entertaining from a visual standpoint but the remake actually has a story.

I've never watched the whole movie , but watching this reaction doesn't really make me want to go back and watch it. I like the use of color but the story just seems too bizarre to me.

Both great films with great scores!

4/10 is generous!

Not sure if you've finished with building your foreign movies list yet, but would recommend: - Cronos (1993) - Battle Royale (2000) - 13 Assassins (2010) - Y Tu Mamá También (2001) - City of God (2002)

Glad you did this movie, I would say I personally prefer 'Tenebrae' by the same director or 'Demons' (produced by this director). Worth checking out either to give him another chance!

Ian

I agree with Tom that the movie isn't THAT bad. I also agree with Shaun's points, about it being dull, etc.
