As a Swedish Chef, I was very pleasantly surprised that you reacted to this *and* gave it a good rating. :D Another small detail that tends to get overlooked: 'Mia' is a variant and/or nickname of 'Maria' ('Mary' in the Swedish translation of the Bible). 'Jof' is most likely an abbreviation of 'Josef', and 'Mikael' means "who is like God?” in Hebrew. No idea if it has any actual meaning in the movie, or if Bergman put it in there just because, but hey. :,D - Bork!

2020-11-18 22:49:09 +0000 UTCI think you guys hit the nail on the head with what Death represents; the fear of God, lack of faith, nothingness, the silence of God when your faith is tested (evident in the confession scene where Antonius Block asks why God hides and Death remains silent). It took me a while to realize that after watching this a few years ago. Definitely a highly interpretive film and a testament to the subtleties of Bergman's writing. Another film along the lines of what Tom said about Psycho and Bicycle Thieves, a film that's truly a piece of art and leaves you pondering. Kudos to you lads for choosing this film!!
