I must have a fear of home invasions because that opening scene with Drew Barrymore still freaks me out. Same as the Strangers!

Wes did return to the elm street franchise with Wes Cravens New Nightmare and it’s brilliant. Its way out of the box, And it’s Meta horror in the same way as scream!

Great reactions, guys but your cons were a little ineffectual. I loved this film the first time I saw it; the send up of slasher films was very well done, but it left me feeling as if the plot didn't add up. Billy's motivation for killing Sydney's mom makes sense but why the spree killing of so many others? How did he convince Stu (Shaggy -- thanks guys!) to go along with his plans? And why (although there is no real indication of this in the film) do I feel that Billy & Stu were a couple? Much like Brandon & Philip in Hitchcock's Rope or Judd & Arthur in Compulsion. Anyway, I think you, two need to watch the other Scream films.

I think that torture porn came and went very quickly, overshadowed by mostly bloodless possession stories. Whereas they're still churning out remakes (like last year's CHILD'S PLAY and this year's INVISIBLE MAN).

You forgot the torture porn era. Which ran along the same time as the Remake Era and had some overlap.

Great reaction. SCREAM basically revived the slasher genre from the dead, after the great '70's-80s slasher franchises (FRIDAY THE 13TH, A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET, HALLOWEEN, TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE and CHILD'S PLAY) had all sputtered out and died after a series of increasingly less successful sequels. What made SCREAM (and the next 5 years of so worth of imitators) different was the meta quality, being a horror story about the actual mechanics and tropes of horror stories themselves. The self-aware quality was pretty original at the time (and was also used on TV in Joss Whedon's BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER, which premiered only 3 months after SCREAM opened in theaters) and helped launch other franchises like I KNOW WHAT YOU DID LAST SUMMER and URBAN LEGEND, but it quickly burned out within 5 or 6 years. After the self-aware slasher trend died out, the next great trend in American horror was the Remake Era of the 2000s, which were mostly straightforward affairs.

Another film that has the same kind of vibe is Urban Legend (1998). You guys might enjoy that one.
