The Witcher: The last King of the elves

Chapter 29 - The War That Has Yet to Break Out

He knew it thanks to the inheritance he had obtained from the Tree of Life.

Thranduil learned that the reason this nameless continent had not been dominated by demons was because of the elves, who, since the beginning of the invasion of hostile races, had been at war against them all.

The elves had ignored the humans, focusing only on the demons.

And the reason why humans were able to sweep across the Continent was not only because of their own powerful war strength, but also due to their terrifying numbers of soldiers.

When the war broke out, an ancient demon broke the rules and forcibly descended upon the Continent in its true form.

It brought with it the power of the abyss, which swept across the entire world. It is known that the power of the abyss is extremely evil.

At the very first moment, countless intelligent creatures and magical beasts were eroded by the power of the abyss and turned into demonized creatures—bloodthirsty and violent—directly providing a terrifying army for the demons, giving them the opportunity to invade the Continent.

The demonized creatures have no self-awareness and are by nature mad and violent.

But they obeyed the orders of the demons. That is why the world calls them the devil’s servants and the demon’s thralls.

The war weakened the elves, and the humans took the opportunity to gain ground over them, conquering each kingdom little by little.

Thranduil had no idea why humans did not exterminate all the demonic races of this world after conquering the Continent.

But that allowed the demons to grow in number once more, and to face the rising tide of creatures, the warlocks were created—humans empowered to hunt under the command of mankind.

Since that war in the north of the Continent, the Blood Moon appeared.
Every three months, during the disaster of the Blood Moon, a large number of creatures from all over the world would transform into demonized beings under the power of the abyss and frenziedly attack everything around them.

The tide of swamp rats that Thranduil had seen earlier was caused by the Blood Moon.

Now the three-month cycle was approaching, and the world was about to face another disaster.

“No wonder so many giant swamp rats appeared today in the ruins of the city center…”

Not only were they stirred by last night’s battle, but, more importantly, by the approaching Blood Moon. Low-level monsters are the most affected, and therefore the most agitated.

As the days passed, he understood he had little time left.

Before, the power of the World Tree protected the inner city, so the magical beasts and monsters within the city were not affected by the Blood Moon. The tide of rats that swept through only wreaked havoc in the outer city.

“But now the situation is different.” The World Tree was asleep. As soon as the Blood Moon appeared, the inner city would inevitably be exposed.

“Even a tide of rats could sweep through anything.” Though he said that, there was no worry on Thranduil’s increasingly handsome face—only a touch of joy.

For him, this was another great opportunity to gain resources! After this period of cleansing, the number of monsters in the city center had been reduced.

Hunting them would only become harder as they spread out.

If a large number of giant swamp rats had not appeared this morning, the elven army under his command would not have been able to harvest so many magic crystals in such a short time.

Even those massive black rats usually hid in the underground world.

It would be very difficult to avoid this new battle.

Now that the Blood Moon had arrived, they would all appear on the surface of the world, even forming a rat tide and besieging his territory.

Surely, he would gain many magic crystals.

“With the help of this Blood Moon disaster, my elven army will have the chance to wipe out all the magical beasts in the ruins of the city center once and for all, and then collect a vast amount of energy crystals.”

“By then, the strength of my territory will surely increase drastically!”
Thranduil looked into the distance at the orcs carrying rubble from the city wall and thought: “After the Blood Moon, I will begin to plan a war against the forces outside the city!”

His territory wished to expand, so naturally it could not coexist with these wicked creatures in the outer city.

Likewise, the evil forces of the outer city could not peacefully coexist with him, the Elven Sun King.

Even if Thranduil did not act, those wicked creatures would eventually invade the inner city.

Therefore, sooner or later, war would break out.

It depended on who struck first.

“What I must do now is strengthen the territory’s defense… I can follow the orcs’ example and use the rubble to build a wall around my territory to withstand the possible rat tide.”

The wall could help his elven army eliminate the rats more effectively.

Thranduil did not want to see those huge black rats breaking into his territory like a flood and wreaking havoc. Not to mention whether the buildings of the territory would be attacked—he did not even want those wooden houses destroyed.

“System, can the elves collect this rubble from the city walls to repair the breaches?”

“[Answering the host, elves can only extract natural minerals and cannot collect manufactured materials.

The rubble of the city wall is also a secondary manufactured product, infused with magical materials, and is not a natural mineral.]”

“Then we will have no choice but to move into this area!” Thranduil looked up at the sky.

Soon, a hawk flew toward him.

It landed on the city wall, stood respectfully, and bowed its head before him.

Lowering his gaze, Thranduil whispered in a soft tone: “Tell your master to convey my order to mobilize 20,000 elves to help restore this wall.”

After thinking about it, Thranduil once again waved the scepter of the Elven Sun King in his hand. The rubble that had previously been invisible began to pile up near the wall.

If the defenses of the wall were restored in the easily accessible areas, he would have the chance to better control the outsiders.
