I have a Theory and I'm interested to see if it bears fruit. Guessing here, but I suspect you guys are both mid-twenties somewhere? That means you came up mostly during the Peak TV era, with its increasing trend of shorter seasons and more serialization enabled by past season streaming availability. That means a show like Firefly is just going to feel weird, being a pre-streaming network show originally scoped for the old 22-episode seasons. Back then if someone missed an episode there wasn't a good way to go back and watch it, so highly serialized shows risked leaving audiences who missed an episode behind and were much rarer. River's story is important to the show, for sure, but it isn't the 'main story' in the sense of a modern show that spends the vast majority of its time advancing a primary plot thread. Rather, Firefly is more of an episodic show focused on the journey of its characters as they travel about. It also only ever got half of its planned first season, so whatever season arc was intended story-wise is incomplete. All that is a long-winded way to say that I wouldn't hold my breath for a 'main story' to really kick into high gear and start driving the show's action - the characters, the unique genre, and the individual-episode stories are the show's selling point. (Oh, and speaking of genre, it might help to think of it less like a sci-fi show with a weird country intro and more like a western that is partially set on a spaceship.)
