Historically... this movie is wayyyy out there. It's a well-made movie... but it's a pretty bad portrayal of the Maya during the era of discovery. They are supposed to be the Classic Maya but act more like the Aztec Not to mention the villagers apparently never seeing or interacting with a city, when Maya were a collection of city-states. It sort of paints a more primitive view of Meso-Americans when they had cities larger than European ones and just as much trade. Villagers never encountering a city just feels REALLY strange. Still it's one of the only big budget movies that show Meso-American culture...
