It makes me laugh that Shaun says he had very low expectations for it and yet also didn't really know much about it lol :). I think with older films you have to just go into them with an open mind. These are the films that established the things that now seem like tropes or cliches, so we can observe a lot from them in terms of seeing that genesis of where they sit in the history of filmmaking and the advances and shifts in style that have occurred. Every film is a product of its time, so if we only watch things from our time we lose some of our capacity to savour the unfamiliar flavours of films from another time or place, which is a shame. I think it's a good exercise to watch old or foreign films regularly to broaden our artistic palate.
