This movie is very much based on the TWA 800 flight that took off from JFK bound for Rome with a layover in Paris in 1996. I live on Long Island and was 14 when it happened. I heard the crash from my bedroom. It was so loud despite happening miles off shore that I thought my front lawn was struck by lightening. I ended up joining the Coast Guard nine years later and worked at the responding Coast Guard Station both as a reservist and on active duty. All the bodies were brought back to that station until they were able to be identified. The building is supposedly haunted and I’ve stood duty and slept there dozens of times. I never saw anything, but many of my shipmates over the years have, particularly on the third deck. I only had to sleep up there three times and I slept with the lights on every time 😬.
