THROWBACK TO 1991. STRETCH AND BOBBITO EARLY DAYS.

So…the earlier the show date, the harder it is to find audio. So please appreciate this nearly 45 mins of a show from 1991, the date of which eludes me. Being on the radio then was still completely novel and foolishly fun.

For years, we followed the reggae show, titled Reggae Riddims, and during the several years that dancehall mixed with hip-hop beats was really big in the clubs and hip-hop circles, I would often transition from the reggae show with island-flavored records, as is the case with this show. It starts of with Kenny Dope’s massive “Supa” with the Louie Culture sample, followed by “Ring the Alarm” by the Fu-Shnickens, who actually created a huge buzz through Chip Fu’s penchant for murdering clubs. To me their records were a disappointment, and this may have been the only time I ever played them, likely because of the Tenor Saw and “Stalag” samples. I always loved Chubb Rock’s “Just the Two of Us” from his album “The One,” which was fire (peep “Organizer and “The Regiments of Steel.”) Next is a record, Smooth Movement’s “The Adventure,” that was one of the first indie records that became indelibly associated with our show because of how many times I played it. V.I.C., later of Beatnuts fame, sampled the exquisite “Promised Land” by Nairobi Sisters, three years before he’d use it again for Kurious “Mansion and a Yacht” featuring Sadat X and Jungle Bother Mike G., and twenty five years before A Tribe Called Quest would revive the loop for “Whatever Will Be” for their final album. I can’t believe how good D-Nice “25 ta Life” and Poor Righteous Teachers “Hot Damn I’m Great” sound right now, and the same goes for one of the earliest, if not THE earliest, promo ever recorded for us by J.V.C. Force. That was a big deal for me. For those that don’t know, their “Strong Island” was a massive record in the Tri-State, rinsed by Red Alert weekly throughout 1987, so linking with them in ’90 was like, whoa. This show is likely the only time I played “O.P.P.” because it blew up over night and I never felt comfortable asking listeners to stay up as late as our show aired just to hear music they could find elsewhere.

Oh, and if you notice some other broadcast bleeding into our show out of nowhere, I have no idea what that is. You’re not tripping. While we’re talking at the end, Pink Floyd is seeping in. Strange, and I have no explanation.

Anyway, enjoy a very wet-behind-the-ears Stretch and Bobbito. Such an amazing time for us.

Mega props to Rolf from Staten Island for blessing me with his collection of cassettes which spanned 90-96, this recording being from those.

I had at least one tape that accidentally(?) included a good chunk of the Reggae Riddims directly before you got on. Good memories! Almost makes up for that time I got a whole bunch of Sun Ra cause KCR did a week-long tribute when he died...

Do we know each other or diff Chris Marino?

Dope 👍

Merci Stretch & Bobbito.

I would venture to guess this show was right around this time of the year 30 years ago, give or take a couple of weeks? Do you recall getting an advance of the Low End Theory? That dropped in Sept and if memory serves Butter was also on the Scenario 12" but that didn't get released maybe not even until 92. OPP and Minds Playin were huge records around this time of the year as well as the Nice and Smooth I remember getting a mix tape from the flea market next to Tower on Broadway right before school started with that How To Flow and OPP.

This is great, lovely hearin D-Nice again, and Butter and the JVC promo was illy, mahuusive Del Rio shouts to you both, and to Rolf for keepin hold o'the gold. BTW. If someone you trusted then hadda told you that people would still be catchin harrdy harrs with lines like TESTOSTERONE, 1 2 3 and BOOMBOOMBAAAH and that theyd still be celebrating your show in 3 decades time, what would you have said ?

Too true.............The DJ Red Alert 'Kiss is the joint' promo was big time whoas' BITD, so hearing this for the first time is major goosebumpys. Harold Melvin sized shouts for it alone !

Thanks fellas. I think I liked the Pink Floyd background music during Bob's shout outs.

This just made my day!!

That J.V.C. Force Promo though.......

Appreciate the insight! Gonna listen to it now!
