Game Review: Agents of Mayhem

Hey everyone! Zak here. Craven is visiting family and my girlfriend is out of town, which means lots of push ups and lots of writing. Many of you know I really like video games, so I decided to review one that I was really excited about. Hope you enjoy it more than I enjoyed this game!

The end just got weirdly serious. After Gaunt it feels like they really lose sight of the joke and tried to push a sincere narrative. Shit really goes downhill once Ariadne shows up. The whole manic pixie nightmare girl is not only a cliche, it was annoying to begin with, and they don't even seem to be going for any kind of joke with her. She's just a genuine budget Harley Quinn. Glad you enjoyed the review! I don't know if you ever saw our reply to you through Patreon's mail system.

This review nailed it, while I'd argue it grew on me over time (the Aisha boss battle was amusing but woefully inspired; and yeah, loved Oni's origin story once I realized it was his daughter talking about him, which took a while to process until she said, "Daddy punishes bad men.") I found myself getting more out of the "Mayhem Knows" aka "knowing is half the battle" interludes when you jump back to base. Le sigh. Why there was no co-op just seems asinine. They have the netcode chops from Saint's Row and this game would have been amazing to team up with a friend to create a 6-person Joe squad. Le sigh. I originally said this was the M.A.S.K./Joes game I always wanted, nearing the end, not so sure anymore.

Love the review and it's lack of "journalistic tone." You call it like you saw it and don't sugarcoat the BS and try to explain it away. I have to say, the Gat thing always seemed so half-assed. He's this cool side-character with occasional moments of badassery, but beyond that he was so awkward. Suddenly you're the boss, even though in SR1 you were just a minion. He just rolls with it. I definitely think more could have been in the SR universe. Like SR3 and 4 were all just a dream. Or you wake up in a tank on Mars in an Ultor facility. The story was already so wacky, they could do pretty much anything.

Haha yeah I'm familiar with Warframe. It became a running joke among my friends and family because when the PS4 first came out it was one of the only games available at the time. I hear it's gone through a lot of improvements but it was pretty whack at the time. So whack that playing Warframe became the butt of "would you rathers". After a while, if we wanted to play any kind of multiplayer, we'd hit each other up with nothing but "Frame?"

Haha I should probably put a nsfw tag on that vid

Off planet would have been amazing and not at all far fetched. Now that I think about it wasn't there some kind of space DLC for 3? I think it was technically a movie set but it was still space themed

That's a pretty solid theory and I buy it. I remember the Gat Pack was a joke DLC directly making fun of another game. Might back been Destiny? Either way I remember it making me laugh at the time.

Oh cool, game reviews are a good idea. Very nice! Have you checked out Warframe at all? If not, you should remedy that as soon as possible, especially if you like this kind of thing. It's probably comparable to this but not funny and outer spacey. All the Destiny-fiends have been getting their fix with it during the content slumps. Best part is that it's free to play.

That Saints Row 3 Gimp scene was uncut dope. I like your reviews!

I've forgotten all about Zimos, he would've been an amazing addition in SR4 along with some of the other characters that weren't included. Like I think it would've been amazing if Killbane really had some super secret base on mars where he'd plan an attack on you for some sort of story DLC or even a short sequel like Gat out of Hell.

Guess I'll just have to wait for Crackdown 3

Too bad. I love the Saint's Row series even for all its weirdness.

Great review! It sucks that some of the things I was worried about from the trailers (clunky writing, lack of focus) turned out true. My guess on Johnny Gat: There was originally a small core of Saints Row I and II players that actually liked the guy, so they gave him a big dramatic death twist in III to create stakes and empathy. But then a whole new group of players hop into the series at SR3, and don't bother going back through SR1 or 2, and so the feedback Volition gets from the majority of players is: "Who's Gat? Why should we have cared?" And Volition's like, alright, you didn't care about him in 3? Let's make that the joke. We're going to build a whole resurrection arc into 4. Then a Gat DLC pack. Then everything we ever create forever until absolutely everyone is like "God, this fucking Johnny Gat again." If any developer is eight-levels deep on it's own lore to want to highlight a non-character like Gat as a joke, it's Volition.
