To Korea!! (Temporary changes to the Patreon Page)

Dear Patreons,

At this point I have attempted to write this post 4 times, without finding myself able to put it quite right. 5th time’s got to be the charm though, right? 

These are very exciting times, as something I started to set in motion years ago has finally come together; an exchange program for my time at The Animation Workshop.

To phrase it shortly… I’m off to Korea!

For the next two months I’ll be studying visual storytelling at the ChungKang College of Cultural Arts, under the mentorship of Mike Nguyen, whose project, “My Little World” I highly recommend checking out.

Story is one of the most important fundaments to our culture, but is often under-prioritized in animation, I feel. I find myself guilty of this pattern as well, often getting distracted by how fancy something is looking rather than what it is saying. That’s why I want to at least take the time to reflect upon the subject, especially now right before our bachelor film pitches are to take place.

The difficult part comes to me in that I can’t guarantee how much I’ll be able to work on Tales of Zale for these next two months as a result, and given that this Patreon page was made with the production of Episode 3 in mind, that starts to complicate things. I will keep the page up, and you’re of course more than welcome to keep your pledges going – but for Tales of Zale specifically, I’ll re-launch the page when I get back.

In the meanwhile, I’d like to keep the Patreon page artist-based, and make posts more based off of what I experience and work on during my time in Korea. I may write a bit about the storytelling subjects I study or what I find in the areas around Seoul. So if you’re interested in that, then stick around!

This is going to be a very grand experience for me, and hopefully it’ll all go towards me producing better work in the future!

….IN OTHER NEWS:

Recently I’ve been livestreaming every Saturday (with the exception of the last one because of exams and Korea preperations). I of course won’t be able to keep them up while I’m out traveling, but the ones that are there so far should give a bit of a behind the scenes look of my work process for ToZ. The livestreams happen on my YouTube channel … So far I haven’t been doing any Patreon-exclusive streams because our overall numbers don’t reach a point where it really makes sense—but if you’d like an exclusive stream, do let me know in the comments!

At The Animation Workshop we’re currently working on our Commercial Project, creating a 30 second short for the Plastic Change organization. It’ll be my first full 3D production! -Although I’m not joining in the animation process itself because it overlaps the exchange time. Really looking forward to seeing how it ends up though. It’ll be done in April, but I don’t know when it’ll be available to viewing on the Internet yet. Attached are some early pre-production pictures.

Tales of Zale has still been moving forward bit by bit in the meanwhile. Shout-out to Nathan Paul this month, who’s been a tremendous help cleaning up the animation!
