Oppy: The Life of a Rover

Using raw rover imagery and the sound of actual wind on Mars, I painted this little portrait of Opportunity, our faithful little martian rover friend that was lost earlier this year. Losing a rover feels a little like losing a pet. But for all that it accomplished, and for all the awesome images it collected over its lifetime, its end is bittersweet. Oppy traveled over 28 miles on Mars over a span of 14 years - an amazing feat of engineering and human ambition.

After immersing myself in these images for hours, I have developed a strange sense of Mars as a real place I have been, riding alongside this little rover that could, making laps across dusty martian plains. My hope is this little portrait gives you a glimpse of that same feeling.

Thanks to all the people at NASA, JPL, and beyond who made this mission possible. Thanks to Matt Brealey for help collecting raw images. And thanks to all you lovely patrons for making this video possible!

How crazy is it that seeing that little guy wander around can bring me almost to tears.... how wonderful can the human race be, when it really wants to be.

What a great idea to show sequences in time like it's moving. It really gives a good sense that this was a rover that rolled around the landscape over time, just like a robot on earth would. When you only see disjointed pictures posted on a website, you lose the sense of time and motion.

Thank you so much for this. I am sure you had thought of this before I asked if you could make an Oppy tribute but it's pretty cool that it happened, either way. Probably just a coincidence but makes me feel a little special, regardless.
