Pitches wanted for new anthology | $200-$250 per essay

Did you grow up reading The  Baby-Sitters Club? Did you aspire to accessorize like Claudia, or to run  your own business like Kristy? Has your stack of BSC books followed you  into adulthood, or been passed along to a new generation of readers? If  so, we want to hear from you!

We are looking for  essays, poetry and visual art for a new anthology of creative and  critical writing and art devoted to Ann M. Martin’s wildly popular young  adult series, The Baby-Sitters Club. The first anthology of its kind,  The Baby-Sitters Club Generation: Growing Up Bookish & Bossy with  the Iconic Series will bring together writing and art that look closely  at how Ann M. Martin’s series shaped our ideas about gender politics,  friendship, fashion and beyond, celebrating the series while also  acknowledging its gaps and shortcomings. We’re particularly interested  in work that addresses the following topics:

• Gender, race, class and sexuality in the BSC
• Entrepreneurship and the business of babysitting
• How the series addresses food, diet, and body diversity
• Representations of illness and disability in the BSC
• Getting older, parenting, and the BSC’s new generation of readers
• Female friendship and girl group cultures
• BSC spinoffs & adaptations: The TV show, the film, the spinoff  series (Little Sister, The Kids in Ms. Colman's Class, California  Diaries), and the graphic novels

GUIDELINES: Please email a short pitch (NOT a completed piece) describing your proposed topic and  approach, along with a bio and 2-3 samples of your work (links are  fine). For poetry submissions, please send 1-3 poems. All contributors  will be paid for their work. Completed pieces will be needed by late  April. The deadline for pitches is March 18th, 2020. 

COMPENSATION: $100 for poetry; $200-250 for essays and artwork.
