We are accepting submissions for our next themed issue. Consider the theme as a prompt; interpret it as widely and creatively as you wish. We prefer short but detailed pitches over complete, on spec submissions for themed issues, but we will consider full pieces. A good pitch should tell us what you want to write about, why you want to write that essay, and why you are the best person to write that essay. We are very much looking for something more substantive than, "I want to write this essay because I have a story that deserves to be told." Something like that isn't telling us anything.
CHAPTER 4: POWER
What is power? What does it mean to feel powerful or to be powerful? Is it possible to be powerful and ethical? What would that look like? What does it mean to be powerless? Have you ever abused your power? What does it mean to live in a world where power is distributed so unequally and where power and wealth are often inextricably linked? We are looking for thoughtful essays that grapple with power in al its permutations.
We pay $1 a word for work up to 3,500 words in length. We seek your best work and we cannot wait to read it. Please note that we will publish many more short essays (in the 1,200 word range) than we will longer (3,500 words) ones. Please only submit one essay, story or pitch at a time.
