Pitches around coronavirus wanted | $1 per word

The coronavirus is impacting our world in countless ways already. And  while the full impact is still unfolding, one thing is certain: it's  making already-vulnerable people like the impoverishes, the infirm, the  elderly, the unhoused, and the incarcerated far more vulnerable. And as  journalists, this presents us with a unique opportunity to tell stories  about vulnerable people, as we always do here —but with the  renewed focus and salience as this disease spreads and underscores our  shared vulnerability. We're only as stable and secure as our most  vulnerable community members.

In response to this  crisis, we are expanding our coverage, at least temporarily, to  shine a light on how the coronavirus impacts the lives of the most  vulnerable people in our society. This of course includes our continued  coverage of people impacted by our criminal legal system, but also  includes coverage of the pandemic's impact on people who are  experiencing houselessness and housing instability, economic  instability, health care instability, and more.

To help  expand our coverage quickly, we are seeking pitches. The stories can be  commentary or reported. The criminal justice system does not have to be  central to the story, but vulnerable populations do need to be central  to the story. For example, we're looking for stories about law  enforcement engagement with houseless and homeless populations, stories  about city and county responses to the threat of evictions, and shutting  off of utilities due to economic instability; stories about state and  local policy around paid sick leave, paid child care, guaranteed basic  income, and access to health care; and so on.

We prefer  shorter pieces, but are open to longer-form as well. We pay $1 per word  up to 1,000 words. Along with your pitch, please also send your resume  and some clips.
