I’m hiring a technical author to write a series of articles aimed at non-technical knowledge workers.
Article: “What is an API?” I am starting with this subject as it is confusing to many non-technical people and it will show your ability to dumb down a technical topic for a non-technical reader.
HYPOTHETICAL OUTLINE (WILL NEED TO BE THOUGHT OUT MORE):
Assume the reader has read basic articles like "What is a database?", so they aren't coming from zero knowledge.
- What is an API?
- How are they commonly structured?
- REST
- How are they accessed?
- Code
- Integrations with tools
- What are some common APIs the average person has come across and likely didn't know it?
- ex. Auto-fill addresses in a drop-down is likely pulling from Google Maps API.
- Why learning to use APIs is useful and powerful?
EXAMPLES:
We really like HubSpot's blog. We are aiming for articles with similar length, style, and tone.
Broader Content: The series is meant to take someone with minimal Excel/Google Sheets experience and guide them from Spreadsheets to Datasets to Databases. APIs are obviously key to understanding how to access 3rd party data. Over time, we will publish articles that go deeper into related subjects.
Target Reader: We are aiming these articles at your average corporate employee who has only worked with small datasets in Excel/Sheets. Think marketing professional that looks at email sends, opens, and click through rates. Or a Shopify store owner looking at customer average order value, site visits, repeat purchases, etc.
Tone: The tone is helpful and non-technical. The writer will use their expertise to dumb down the subject, so anyone can understand it. We want our voice to be the helpful engineer in the office. The one that is not condescending, and everyone feels comfortable approaching with a “dumb” question.
Arrangement: We are currently hiring for one article. If we like your work, we have plans for 10-20 articles over the next few weeks. We’d love to have 1-2 writers become regular contributors.
Length: 1,000-2,000 words
Payment: $150
- For this first article we are firm on rate.
- Open to negotiation if we choose to move forward with an ongoing relationship.
