Remote Marketing Copywriter wanted | $25+ per hour
Added 2020-04-07 10:15:11 +0000 UTCCOMPANY/PUBLICATION: HELLO LANTERN
We’re looking for a curious and straight-shooting copywriter who can handle the complexity of writing in different voices for different clients with different brand personalities. If your dream job includes banging out a how-to guide for a company in the health industry, then writing email copy for a solopreneur in the finance industry, then creating and scheduling a slew of social media posts for a team in the landscape industry, this is the role for you.
Lantern helps growing companies close more sales by creating a compelling story to simplify marketing and attract the right customers. Our mission is to conquer marketing chaos.
We specialize in StoryBrand marketing, websites and sales assets that help companies with 25-100 employees win more business (www.hellolantern.com). While our founder is located in Indianapolis, IN, we are a 100% remote company and work with clients across North America. We are a fun team and we admit, we’re a little biased — but we are pretty sure we are the coolest company to work for, ever.
Honestly, the job is not all puppy dogs and rainbows — there is some good news and there is some bad news.
LET’S GET THE BAD NEWS OUT OF THE WAY FIRST:
The pay is just okay. Meaning, you won’t get rich at this job. The pay starts at $25/hour. If you are seeking a job to support a household then this is no longer the ”coolest” part-time job ever, it is now a stink fest of a part-time marketing job.
Review point 1.
NOW LET’S TALK ABOUT THE GOOD STUFF:
Our office is on the Internet. We use asana, slack, google drive, and zoom conferences to do 98% of our work. Meaning, you’ll work from your home and you’ll need fast internet to talk to strangers online. We stick with audio + screensharing 84% of the time, so that we don’t have to talk about the fact you *might* be working in your pajamas. PJs are ok, as long as you get your work done! We just care that you are nice, communicate well and have a good attitude.
You’ll use the StoryBrand framework every day to help B2B businesses improve their marketing. We live and breathe storytelling, and will create about 489 BrandScripts and one-liners a year. Seriously, it’s our marketing DNA. We have resources available to level up your skills, but you need to bring a love for learning and following a proven framework to simplify our approach to helping businesses.
The work is fun, fresh and dynamic. You will be working directly for our founder, Josh, helping him with a mix of marketing clients on a monthly basis. They range from circuit board manufacturers to service-based firms like consultants, sales advisors and software developers.
We aren’t big on stress. So, while we will expect you to work efficiently and get things done, we focus on open communication and getting things done right the first go around. It’s always better to adjust a deadline than to deliver half-baked copy.
The hours are super flexible. We will work with your schedule to find a routine that works for you. Our core team is working 10-4pm EST, so client calls happen during those times. But the rest of your work is up to you. Three long days a week best for you? No problem. Would you rather work at the crack of dawn and again mid afternoon? Cool, we can do that too.
You will experience things, do things, and make decisions on things that no big stuffy company would ever allow you to do.
NOW, LET’S TALK ABOUT THE JOB REQUIREMENTS:
We need someone who can write concise, compelling, easy-to-digest copy and think strategically. You will be helping to create brand narratives and strategy for the clients we work with. This is a collaborative role with a bit of a learning curve and a lot of responsibility—but we don't expect you to know everything right off the bat. It's a part-time position (starting at 15 hours a week, depending on client workload) with the potential to shift to full-time eventually.
To be successful in this role, you should have experience writing in different voices and multiple contexts. Ideally, you have written copy for a handful of social media campaigns and you would feel comfortable taking the transcript from a client interview or a page on a website and turning it into a series of compelling emails. You should like the idea of taking a sharp, juicy one-liner and spreading it across someone’s website like warm butter.
If your dream job involves getting to take clunky bullet points and company research, and organize it into practical, postable, publishable material, this is the part-time gig for you. You’ll help us take conversations that are chock-full of usable ideas and curate them into useful content. You’ll be instrumental in helping business owners figure out how to effectively talk to their customers for the first time. You’ll help people take the ideas in their heads and visualize them in engaging, authentic social media posts. And it’s gonna feel great.
THIS IS HOW YOU’LL DO IT (JOB RESPONSIBILITIES):
Support Lantern clients with content creation — including, but definitely not limited to:
Writing email campaigns (using the StoryBrand sales funnel framework)
Creating copy for any page of a website (home, about, product, etc)
Spinning up three months’ worth of social media posts from an airtight brandscript
Writing up a case study after reading/listening to an interview transcript
Drafting thought leadership articles and simple sales PDFS
Support Lantern internal marketing with content creation — including any of the above projects.
This is what your job is not:
You’re not a salesperson. By all means, offer our services to people in your network, but it’s not what we pay you for. We pay you for your writing prowess. We’ll bring you the clients.
You’re also not the account manager. You may talk with a Lantern client occasionally to present copy or clarify something, but you don’t need to worry about balancing client relationships.
You’re not the marketing strategist. Do bring your strategic energy to the table, but you’re more likely to be focused on the execution—taking a marketing roadmap and creating the content to bring it to life.
You’re not a designer. An eye for design is excellent, but if the social media campaign you create involves making some sweet graphics, or the case study you’ve written needs a visual pop, you’ll know who to send your copy to.
REQUIREMENTS
You need to be the type of person who gets energy from getting things done. Every day, you will bang out a list of stuff. Fun stuff. Important stuff. Necessary stuff.
You should be comfortable with words, but not just your words. You should feel like you could write the same message in seven different people’s voices. Try writing an invitation to dinner as it would come from you, your favorite high school teacher, your sibling, your mom, the president, Yoda, and your favorite pop star. Did you love that? Then keep reading.
It definitely helps if you have a sense of design aesthetics and a love for witty communication. We’re out to change the world of B2B marketing, after all.
You will be on conference calls with our team a lot. So, you need to enjoy talking with people and hammering out a direction for a project.
We’re a feedback-based team. If you love writing but don’t like to hear that someone wants to change something you wrote, keeping a diary may be a better (though slightly less lucrative) outlet for your talents.
You need to be a person who loves to deliver remarkable experiences to other people. In other words, you need to be someone who feels good by making other people feel good.
You need to nail down the details. You don’t need to race through work and get things done half-baked (we figured that one out ourselves). We need you to slow things down and get them done right.
We want you to be meticulous in your work. If you are shy or quiet, that is totally cool. We are not looking for the life of the party. . . in fact, quite the opposite. We are looking for a good, fun person who gets stuff done.
Our office is casual, but we do expect professionalism and punctuality. We expect intelligence, energy, and a get-it-done attitude. When you have questions, send a quick slack to a team member. We’re accountable adults on this team — it’s your job to stay on the hunt until you find the answers you need.
NEXT STEPS
If this is a job that gets you so excited that you would even do it for free, we would totally accept that offer from you.
But if you prefer compensation (and we totally get it. . . we prefer getting paid as well), this is what we offer: This is a part-time copywriting job. The pay starts at $25 an hour and the hours will be 15-20 a week, with the possibility for full-time hours in the future.
We are looking to bring someone on board in the next 60 days, but we are committed to investing the necessary time to find the best fit in terms of both skillset and team culture.
If we think you’d be a good fit, we’ll ask you to send a quick video telling us why you think you’re perfect for this job and why you will rock this position. This is purely for us to get a sense of your personality.
