Pitches due May 4th (culture, profiles, fashion, cannabis) (worldwide) | 40 to 50 cents per word

Deadline: 4 May 2020 (9 am EST)
I’m one of the people who read all of your pitch emails. It’s a little unnerving to be planning a magazine that won’t be in the world until Fall 2020. Who knows what the world will be like? Who knows what people will want to read? Who knows if people will want to read anything?
But safe escape hatches that we can access from the comfort of our couches feel pretty essential right now. Even in the before, we wanted to be a page-turnable portal to a place full of curious and interesting things, some weed-related, some not, and this will be our tenth issue. We’re hoping to pull together something marvelous to mark the occasion and connect people through a shared 88-page experience.
Before we get into the pitches, two notes. First—and as always—we pay writers. Rates are negotiated when we commission a story, and we do our best to match your standard rate. Rates usually hover somewhere between $.40-$.50/word, with flat rates for shorter pieces in the $75-$100 range. Article lengths range from 300-1500 words.
Second: We read and review every pitch, and decide after the pitch window closes which stories to commission. So if you email a pitch right away, expect to wait a bit for an answer. And quality always trumps speed.
Pitches are due by 9:00 a.m. EST Monday, May 4th, and all stories will be assigned by Friday, May 8th. First drafts will be due by June 1st. Any feature assigned for Issue 11 will have later deadlines. Keep in mind that there is a three-month lead time between issues. Issue 10 will hit stands in Fall 2020.
Thanks for reading this mini-epic. I’m looking forward to spending the next week with your emails. Read on for pitch prompts!
PITCH PROMPTS
ARTFUL LIVES: We love profiles of interesting women or nonbinary folks, especially artists, writers, musicians, and designers who blazed their own trails. (See previous issues for Sister Rosetta Tharpe, Sister Corita Kent, Pegge Hopper, Leonora Carrington, Maruja Mallo, etc.) Could be dead or living, ideally not be a household name. (Pro tip: if you pitch a visual artist, please include who controls rights to the work. Budgets and logistics are real, and we have to be sure we can get permissions and afford to license images. Looking back in history is an asset; all hail the public domain!) 600 to 800 words.
COMFORT OBJECTS: In unsettling times, how do we take care of ourselves? How do we take care of each other? Looking for a writer who can transcend the personal to thoughtfully explore how time and culture shape our notions of comfort, and what it might mean to find comfort in this particular moment. Important: we are not looking for articles about weed as self-care, or personal self-care rituals, unless it’s something really unusual that ties to a bigger cultural idea. 600 to 1000 words.
FASCINATING PEOPLE IN ACTIVISM/ART/MUSIC/WRITING/FASHION: Jarina De Marco, Nina Parks, Mennlay Golokeh Aggrey, Claire Evans—this is just a sampling of some of the interesting people writers have interviewed. Pitch us the person you’d like to talk with for Issue 10; stories featuring people of color or people outside of North America are especially welcome. Q & A format; assignments range from 800 to 1,000 words.
STORIES THAT NEED TO BE TOLD: We’re curious to hear what stories are calling to you right now. What stories—in the weed world or the wide world—are not being heard? This is a call to think beyond the personal and use your power as a writer/storyteller to elevate something important and overlooked. Please keep in mind that this will not publish until fall 2020. Consider the way the world is shifting as you craft your pitch; we can’t be news-focused due to our long lead time. Length and format TBD depending on pitch, no more than 1,000 words.
POTLUCK: Want to pitch us something else, not on the list above? Please do. We are a magazine for cannabis lovers, but only some of what we publish directly references weed. We love fresh, informed writing that is funny, thoughtful, curious, and smart.
