I'm working right now on commissioning pieces for the September issue (for which we'd need drafts by late June) and also for November, for which we'd need drafts by late August. As you can imagine, both are focusing in large part on the pandemic.
September is mostly focused on how nation states are responding, and how the technological relationships between countries are changing, while November is looking towards how to create a more resilient society in the future.
For both of them, we're open to—eager for—pitches, for reported features, profiles, and essays/criticism. We usually pay between $1 to $2 a word (which I realize is a wide range) depending on the nature of the piece and the level of experience of the writer. Typically our stories run from 800 -3000 words though we do go shorter or longer if the story needs it.
