We pay competitive and fair freelance rates. Email me if you want to pitch a story re: scientific innovation, ethics, and the future of society.
Here are some guidelines about what I’m looking for at the moment:
- Spotlighting innovative ways that scientists on the front lines are responding — this could be bigger picture (developing vaccines, drugs, clinical trials, testing, antibodies). Example - big picture spotlights, or more personal: What is it like to be a scientist on the front lines under intense pressure to do the work fast AND well?
- Interviews with chief scientists in other countries that have done a better job than the U.S. (lessons to be learned) — for example, Iceland, Singapore, Germany, New Zealand
- Examination of ethical/societal issues arising in real time thanks to the virus, like whether companies should profit off vaccines that need to be accessible and affordable for everyone.
- Ways to help our readers cope with the crisis in their own lives by bringing them the expertise of highly credible scientists, like our recent feature on how to interpret COVID statistics
I am not looking for breaking news or dire/doomsday features. There is enough of that, as we all know. I am looking to offer insights about the scientific work underway and, where appropriate, to provide optimism, opportunities for reflection, and guidance about how we can be smarter and better at getting this pandemic under control.
Turnaround times are shorter now — once I assign a story, I would like it to be filed within a week if possible. Length is typically around 500-1000 words, with rates averaging at $1/word depending on reporting intensity required, finished length, and experience.
