WIHD is looking to hire a part-time Manual Writer to work as a consultant and on an hourly basis. The hours for this position will vary based upon the number of assignments requested by DSS, as well as their level of difficulty. On average, the hours range from 5-15 hours per week. All work can be completed remotely, with the exception of the monthly Team meeting and the rare in-person Manual trainings.
Hours are flexible and can be logged at the convenience of the Manual Writer, provided that assignments are submitted for approval to DSS within five business days of them having been assigned. The Manual Writer will report directly to the Manual team leader at WIHD.
Child Welfare Services at WIHD provides a comprehensive array of services, supports and advocacy for children and families involved with the child welfare system in Westchester County. These services include clinical assessments of children and their birth parents, pediatric medical care, mental health treatment for children, parent education and training, foster parent support, educational coordination and advocacy, post-adoption services and community-based aftercare for families reunifying from foster care. In addition, Child Welfare Services has developed an online policy manual for child welfare staff at the Department of Social Services (DSS). The Manual exists for the purpose of training, orienting, and guiding staff in real time, in three program areas: Child Protective Services, Preventive Services, and Foster Care and Adoption. It provides all levels of DSS staff with immediate access to the latest information they require to practice in accordance with standards set by the federal, state, and local levels of government.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Rewrite complex policy and programming information into accessible language and will also be called upon to thoughtfully integrate text, forms, and other online resources into the vast website.
- Working independently (based on directives from DSS staff) to draft new text for the Manual, or to revise existing text.
- Submitting writing assignments for approval within five business days, and often revising based on feedback received.
- Serving as a key member of the Manual Team through frequent email communications and phone calls, as well as one in-person meeting per month.
- Producing monthly and quarterly statistical and performance data.
- Co-leading occasional (1-2 times annually) Manual trainings for DSS staff in various district offices around Westchester County.
EDUCATION, KNOWLEDGE, AND SKILL REQUIREMENTS:
Knowledge of: Child Welfare
Qualification: Familiarity with html and other web interfaces is a plus, but not required
Kind and Length of Experience: Excellent writing skills and will have experience in the field of child welfare, preferably in the State of New York.
Education: Bachelor’s degree; a masters degree in social work or in a related field preferred
General: Candidates must be able to work independently and possess excellent time management skills so as to complete assignments on time. Selected candidates will be asked to submit a writing sample.
