I pay well for good stories.
COMPENSATION: Generally speaking, we pay a base rate of $250 for feature stories. That's the absolute minimum for something lightweight, like a roundup or short opinion piece that requires very little in the way of reporting/interviews/research. However, the rates can and do scale up from there depending on depth/complexity/awesomeness. I've paid as much as $2,000 for super amazing, well-sourced, creatively-reported exclusive stories. However, the average is around $400-$500 for a 1,000-word piece. In all cases, we discuss rate, length, interviews, timeline, due date before setting someone loose on a story. That way we know exactly what we're paying for, and the writer knows exactly what we're after.
