There are several different kinds of stories and projects we commission. Some are project based rates. There are day rates for photos, etc. But for example, a roughly 2,000 word story reported by one reporter would usually be $1/word. We pay expenses (within reason). Longer stories require a conversation—we sometimes share costs for huge stories with partner publications. So there's no one commission rate, it depends on the project. But I will say we pay very fairly and within 30 days, and flexible on contract terms/rights. We don't commission a large number of stories, though. We are a small team. We prioritize timely data, accountability and solutions based stories right now.
