We want to ensure that our staff is made up of talented obsessives with a variety of experiences and perspective, and from a diverse set of backgrounds.

To that end, we are dedicated to building up our newsroom, constantly improving the quality of our journalism, and creating a more modern and sustainable media company. This fall, we’re hiring three fellows to work throughout the Vox newsroom to help us ensure we are telling the most important stories to our audience and approaching those stories with nuance and discernment. The fellowship is a one-year, full-time, salaried position (with benefits).

Vox is looking for fellows across platforms and beats to contribute to our daily coverage. This is a hands-on role where you will pitch, report, and create Vox content in one of the following departments:

• Vox.com: As a reporter writing for Vox.com in one of our core subject areas (culture, politics and policy, race and identity, science and health, tech, and world news)
• Short-form Video: As a producer or motion graphics designer on our video team, creating videos for our YouTube channel
• Audio: As a member of the production staff of one of our podcasts, such as Today, Explained, or the Ezra Klein Show
• Core edit: As a member of our engagement and social media, visual design, or copy editing teams

The Vox Essential Voices Fellowship is a perfect opportunity for emerging journalism talent, subject-matter experts looking to move into journalism, or established journalists who want to switch beats or gain expertise on a new platform.

The fellowship will be a year-long program to provide extensive training and mentorship along with opportunities above and beyond that of traditional entry-level/intern positions. Aside from intensive feedback from editors, fellows will also have dedicated mentors, exclusive networking opportunities, brown bag sessions featuring management throughout Vox Media, and the chance to attend one professional conference per year, such as NABJ, NAHJ, SRCCON or NICAR.

WE’RE LOOKING FOR SOMEONE WITH:

• A demonstrated passion for a particular beat and medium, and interest in ensuring diverse voices and experiences are a robust part of the future of journalism
• An interest in explanatory journalism
• Previous newsroom experience (including college papers) or comparable experience in another field — we have had great luck turning lawyers, think tank staffers, scientists and other subject-matter experts into great journalists
• Tenacious curiosity and a creative approach to storytelling

WHAT YOU’LL DO:

• Produce distinct Vox content for one of our core editorial departments
• Cover breaking news events when applicable
• Participate in story meetings and pitch fresh ideas
• Work with editors to shape and improve content
• Participate in skill shares, training, and mentorship opportunities with fellowship cohort from across the company, including fellows from The Verge and New York Magazine

• The department where you’d like to work (as well as your beat of choice, if applicable) and why, and one alternate choice.

The first class of fellows will begin in the fall. Applications are due Aug. 21.
