I'm taking submissions againt. Please send with a brief description of narrative arc + cultural context, a little info about you + clips. I occasionally accept pitches, but am more able to work with drafts.
I especially love pieces that use narratives of hobbies, fascinations, and obsessions as a frame for writing about identity and making a broader cultural point.
Even if the events are past tense, grammatically, write with the energy of present tense. Rather than mostly summarizing memories, carry the reader through moments with an immediacy that will allow the reader to come along for the ride.
Make sure your story is conveying a larger point, or has some sort of core significance—be it a personal essay or a piece of culture commentary. I really loved editing this essay, which marries personal essay + culture commentary.
Don’t try to contain your life story in a single essay— focus on delivering a narrative arc, and choosing the scenes that best convey it. I promise you can save the out of frame pieces for your memoir. Taking it to flavortown here.
I would also be very into drafts like this one, that double as personal essay and object lesson. I hope to read drafts full of personality and fascinations.
What I am not looking for:
- Takes, op-eds, reactions tied to the news cycle—tho if you've got a great story that happens to be a popular activity these days (ie rollerskating) that's totally fine!
- Drafts longer than 3k words
- Fiction or poetry
P.S. This is not time sensitive, I would rather something you feel spectacular about in a month than something you feel rushed about in a day.
