We just published an essay on what it’s like to be cheated on when you’re in an open marriage because of its frankness and the insight that it offers into open relationships. It’s well written. But the piece also serves as a segue to a new books announcement.
When I was doing interviews and research and formulating my ideas, I found the doctrine of mutually assured destruction (MAD) to be a fitting analogy and guide for dating and couples.
Thinking about why some couples stayed together in New York and why others ultimately split up, lead me to a simple theory. (This occurred to me especially, after speaking with an interviewee in a follow-up call after our initial interview.)
I riffed on this idea for a couple years, before eventually crystallizing my theory, which I can hardly call my theory actually, as I’m sure this concept, in some form, has already been understood by many of us. But I like the word theory, and I came up with a term for it.
Here it is. People in relationships stay or leave based on what I call the doctrine of mutual self-destruction.
To explore its effect on relationships, I created a new publication. We are happy to announce that Superchamp Books will publish the first edition of this book anthology series in December.
We’re looking for dating and sex writers, as well as sex workers who write or would like to write about their dating life. And of course, anyone else who finds this topic interesting is welcome.
We’re currently accepting submissions. Pitches or previously written (published or not) are both good. Rates: $200 for previously published pieces. $200 starting rate for previously unpublished pieces, 1,200 words min/2,500 words max. Email me.
