THE PROGRAM / DEPARTMENT / TEAM
The mission of the Resource Development (RD) department is to advance the organization’s strategic goals and support our worldwide team by raising flexible funds, profile and influence. The RD team encompasses several dozen dynamic professionals who possess a wide range of skills. We are gift officers, direct response fundraisers, web developers, marketers and media relations strategists. THE POSITION
The Mass Market Fundraising Copywriter serves as the offline fundraising writer, copy editor and content manager on the Brand Marketing Team. They create, edit and oversee storytelling and messaging for a full suite of fundraising content including direct mail, telemarketing, donor stewardship, sustainer and mid-level donor communications, partnering with other creative team members and agency partners to develop and implement campaign themes to ensure that fundraising messaging is aligned and accurate across all channels. They stay informed on the latest industry trends and track content performance, helping channel managers adapt accordingly. They exercise donor-centric thinking and expert fundraising instincts that enable the team to deliver a superior donor experience and drive results.
Essential Responsibilities
STRATEGY AND PLANNING
- Assists in setting content direction in support of multi-channel mass market fundraising strategies, leveraging audience insights, production realities, and Mercy Corps’ brand story to drive audiences toward a desired action.
- Partners with colleagues and Resource Development teams in developing and maintaining agency-wide alignment of voice, brand and content strategy.
- Translates complex issues into compelling and accessible content.
- Assists with the development and testing of innovative messaging to engage donors, improve donor experience and increase content performance.
PROGRAM MANAGEMENT
- In coordination with agency partners, leads the day-to-day production of mass market content for direct mail, receipts, telemarketing, sustainer and mid-level communications, donation pages, etc.
- Executes all writing, fact-checking and proofreading of agency-produced content, and copy editing tasks for the offline mass market fundraising team with an emphasis on direct mail appeals, cultivation and stewardship pieces.
- Collaborates with the Senior Marketing Copywriter, fundraising and content strategists, and creative team members to deliver work that is innovative, on strategy, and effective.
- Supports editorial oversight to ensure Mercy Corps’ voice and values come to life consistently in all written communications.
- Maintains a focus on delivering value to our many audiences through engaging content that puts donor needs first and utilizes fundraising best practices.
- Ensures that all copy and content is clear, compelling, consistent, and completed on time and according to strategy.
- Supports content management and maintenance.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATION & TRANSFERABLE SKILLS
- 4+ years of copywriting experience related to fundraising, philanthropy or related fields.
- Proven success with translating fundraising strategies and goals into effective campaigns across multiple channels and communication formats.
- Track record of using purposeful storytelling to drive organizational impact and business results in a nonprofit, foundation or NGO setting.
- Demonstrated ability to adapt style and message for a variety of audiences – diversified portfolio of writing samples required.
- Experience with leveraging data and performance results to shape strategy and creative concepts.
- Understands fundraising and marketing content trends across varied media types.
- Experience improving content management and maintenance practices
- Strong project management skills and superior attention to detail.
- BA/S or equivalent in related field – English, creative writing, marketing, or advertising
