We're expanding our coverage of environmental justice, and we’re seeking pitches. How do race/income determine who bears the brunt of pollutants and global heating? Please get in touch!
The following are key subject areas in which we’re looking to commission stories - but we’re open to other topics in the EJ realm, too:
- the climate crisis and its disproportionate impact on particular communities
- polluted communities and problems such as lead, diesel exhaust and PFAS chemicals
- waste and plastic
- the environmental impacts of extractive industries and agriculture
- people organizing against environmental racism in their own communities and the US more broadly
- stories that can be community-driven or crowdsourced
We publish news stories, features, investigations and photo essays. Our average story length is 500-1,200 words, though we do run occasional long reads.
Your pitch does not need to be long, but a few key details will help us determine if this story is right for us. We’ll want to know:
- What is this story about, and why does it need to be told now?
- How is this story linked to broader issues around environmental justice?
- Why you’re well-positioned to write this story
Our usual rate is $0.50/word and we cover pre-agreed expenses.
