Are you obsessed with the dining scene in Chicago? Do you have proven journalistic chops? There might be a spot for you writing for us.
We’re seeking freelance writers with extensive knowledge of the diverse and exciting restaurant scene in Chicago and its surrounding suburbs to contribute maps and guides on a freelance basis. Get in touch if you’ve devoured every taco in Little Village, tried all the dal on Devon, understand the Chicago food scene inside and out (not just Downtown Chicago; River North gets enough attention), or dwell on where to find the best shrimp DeJonghe or French onion soup.
Those interested must be good with their smartphones for capturing the food photos. These freelancers will round out the site’s existing group of writers and photographers. New contributors must be comfortable with learning new CMS/online publishing systems.
This is a great way to plunge deeper into Chicago’s dining scene, but we’re only interested in passionate writers eager to share their prowess with the rest of the city, the types who check off their own growing restaurants lists to ensure they don’t miss out on any deliciousness. Social media skills are a bonus, too.
Is this you? Send a brief email with the subject line “Contributor.” Include a little bit about yourself, any relevant professional experience, and a previous writing sample or two. Links to a personal website (something other than Instagram) and social media profiles are helpful.
If you’re serious about getting started, include three brief map ideas/pitches that you think would work for us. If we like what we see, we’ll be in touch quickly with rate information and other details.
COMPENSATION: This is for maps, not features or news stories—$100 to $300. This is specific to our edition — our rates aren't standard across the network. Rate is dependent on subject matter, how detailed the maps are, and writer experience. The lower range would be updating existing maps. For example, we have a pizza map that needs new photos, deleting any closed restaurants, and adding a few new ones. It's not as large as a task as updating from scratch.
