THE PITCH

Please send pitches to reporter@climatecorrespondent.com.

Please send us a short pitch of your idea of up to 250 words. This should include a potential headline and a one sentence summary of the story you want to tell. If you have more than one idea you can send us up to three at once in the same email. Please let us know in your pitch if you can provide photos.

The subject of the email should be “Pitch from [country + region] : [Short summary of your pitch]

Please do not send your pitch as an attachment or send us any photos. Just send us a short pitch in the body of the email. We won’t be able to respond to pitches including an attachment.

THE BASICS

We are a weekly newsletter which publishes Wednesday morning at around 7am UK time. We publish stories of the climate crisis—and solutions to it—from countries outside the US, Canada and Europe.

One thing that makes us unique is our approach to these stories: we want first hand thoughts and experiences from people embedded in communities outside the most developed economies. For us, a personal conversation with someone who speaks for the communities affected by climate change, or is doing something about it, provides insights that can be as useful as hard statistics.

However, it is equally important that you know what story you have to tell. While our pieces are short, we want them to have a clear narrative structure.

THE STORY

We are looking for stories of 600-800 words (maximum 1000 words) which shed light on an aspect of the climate crisis our audience - largely based in the UK - may not know that much about.

We publish a broad range of stories related in some way to the climate crisis. As just some examples see this story about people hit by Hurricane Eta in Nicaragua; this one looking at how Bengaluru’s sacred sites have become unlikely havens for the city’s native tree species; and this one about the increased use of fossil fuel generators in Nigeria during lockdown.

We do not necessarily require original reporting - sometimes our stories tell the more personal side of an article writers have done for another publication, or provide a behind-the-scenes description of how climate change is affecting daily life in places climate journalists are living.

Our stories are published in English but if your written English is not perfect please do not hesitate to pitch.. We also accept pitches in Spanish and can translate articles written in Spanish to English.

PAYMENT

We currently pay €100, thanks to a grant from the ECSJ. This payment includes the story, 4-5 reading recommendations, and any photos supplied by the writer. We are unable to provide further provision for any expenses. Payment will be made on publication of the newsletter.
