In the midst of a chaotic news cycle, are you wondering whether there is room for your food-focused story to exist in the world? The answer is, simply, emphatically, yes. A few guidelines for pitching:
First, these are our evergreen pitch guidelines, which could use a bit of updating, but which I've found to be quite helpful in defining what we're looking for overall.
Note: We are no longer accepting essays for the series. That said, we are looking to run more personal essays and commentary in 2021, so if you have an idea that might work, run it by us!
It may seem like some news items (see: storming the Capitol) steal the oxygen from the ability to tell more sedate, thoughtful stories, or anything unrelated to the hot-topic-du-jour. Never fear! Plenty of appetite remains for smart journalism on a range of issues.
We're also (always) looking for smart stories at the intersection of food/ag and politics, especially in light of a brand-new administration that has indicated some big policy shifts in the coming months.
Other topics that are always of interest, but with a particular emphasis at this particular moment in history: hunger, labor protections, racial equity, climate, immigration.
We're also looking to expand our coverage of food media itself, digging into ethical issues of gatekeeping, who gets to tell stories, evolving standards, what gets ignored, and the like.
So please, pitch away. We always respond, even if it takes a little bit (please indicate in subject if a pitch is time-sensitive).
Our rates vary by level experience and difficulty of assignment—and are higher for writers we've worked with before—but are generally quite competitive!
