Seeking freelance writer or journalist for suicide prevention brochure project to (1) conduct interviews and write stories of individuals with lived experience and (2) write educational material about suicide prevention based on a provided outline. The position requires excellent writing and editing skills; we prefer that the writer have a connection to our mental health and suicide prevention mission.
ORGANIZATION OVERVIEW
Families for Depression Awareness (FFDA) is a national nonprofit organization based in Waltham, MA, that helps families recognize and cope with depression and bipolar disorder to get people well and prevent suicides. Our programs and publications target family caregivers so that they gain the information, skills, strategies, and confidence to support their loved ones in getting care and progressing toward wellness.
PROJECT SCOPE
The Brochure Copywriterβs work includes writing (a) 6 stories of lived experience featuring families affected by suicide loss or attempted suicide and (b) educational content about suicide prevention. FFDA will identify and provide contact information for the individuals to be interviewed and an outline for the educational material. The brochure is intended for an audience of laypeople, particularly family caregivers of people living with a mood disorder. The project is to be completed by April 30, 2021.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Meet virtually with FFDA staff at the outset and as needed
- Keep FFDA updated about progress and communicate about any problems
- Produce 6 family stories that focus on particular topics in suicide prevention (4 stories approximately 250 words each, 2 stories approximately 500 words each)Schedule interviews with individuals identified by FFDA
Conduct the interviews
Write story drafts, ensuring that they are within word limits
Engage identified families or FFDA staff for clarity as needed
Submit drafts to FFDA for review and make revisions as requested
Seek review by and gain approval from interviewees
Submit final copy - Write educational material about suicide prevention based on outline provided (5 pages)
- Respond to feedback promptly
- Work within deadline
QUALIFICATIONS
- Minimum of three years professional writing experience, preferably including work for a nonprofit organization or educational institution
- BA or BS degree or higher
- Compassion and sensitivity for people affected by suicide loss and mental health conditions
- Ability to convey the family caregiver perspective effectively
- Ability to write clear, concise, reader-appropriate, and grammatically-correct copy
- Ability to work independently and creatively.
COMPENSATION
The sum of $900 for the project; payment to be made after submission of all components of the project in unprotected Word format, following receipt of an invoice.
