SICK is now accepting pitches and submissions from chronically ill and disabled people for issue 3. Please read all guidelines and FAQ before submitting.
The submission period is open from March 29 – April 23, closing at 11:59pm GMT. Full draft submissions are preferred, but pitches from writers who have relevant clips are equally considered.
RATES AND PAYMENT:
For this issue, we’ve been able to slightly increase our rates! Our current rates of payment are:
11 pence per word
£45 for visual art and poetry
Please note that you do not have to be based in the UK to submit, but all contributors will be paid in GBP and via PayPal if outside of the UK. All contributors will receive payment upon completion of work.
WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR:
- Personal essays and narrative nonfiction
- Reported features
- Op-eds offering a unique perspective
- Interviews with sick & disabled writers, musicians, artists, activists, entrepreneurs
- Flash fiction & nonfiction
- Poetry (submit up to four poems)
- Visual art of any medium (submit a minimum of two and a maximum of six images)
If possible, please read a copy of SICK before submitting to familiarise yourself with the kind of work we publish.
Some things we’re not interested in: comics, cartoons, nature photography, rhyming poems, horror stories, fantasy, YA fiction, screenplays, academic writing. SICK does not publish work that includes medical advice, reviews of treatments or diets, ‘wellness’ tips, stories of ‘overcoming’ illness, or personal photographs.
HOW TO SUBMIT:
- All pitches and submissions should be sent to olivia@sickmagazine.co.uk with the word ‘pitch’ or ‘submission’ in the subject line
- For written submissions (excluding poetry), include a brief summary of your work, a word count, and a short bio with your submission attached as either a Word doc, Google doc, or PDF. If you are submitting poetry, you only need to include a bio.
- For pitches, write 1-3 paragraphs including what the piece will be about, why it’s important, a suggested headline, and 2-3 relevant examples of recent work alongside a bio. If you do not have any recent relevant work, please submit a full or partial draft instead.
- For visual art, include a short artist statement and bio and send work as attachments and not in the body of the email or as zip files
