Pitches wanted (food) | ~$1 per word

I’m looking for pitches for first-person essays for upcoming issues of the food and cooking magazine we publish seven times a year (Jan/Feb, March/April, May/June, July/August, September, October/November, December). The theme of this recurring essay page is Stamp of Approval, so in all pitches we’re looking for the traditions, routines, offbeat food combinations, star ingredient, etc. that you swear by. We’ve published essays endorsing ranch dressing as the only condiment needed, eating dinner for breakfast, and why tiny cakes are far superior to regular-size cakes. Targeted, specific pitches work best. I’d encourage you to check out a few back issues at the link above before submitting your pitch to ensure it’s in line with what we’re looking for.

I am most immediately looking for pitches for our upcoming October/November ’21 issue and December ’21 issues, but will review pitches for issues into 2022 as well. For the remaining two issues of 2021, pitches can be seasonal in nature (Halloween/Thanksgiving/Diwali/Hanukkah/Christmas/New Year’s/Kwanzaa traditions, general winter or fall traditions, etc.) or evergreen.

Pieces run 350-450 words, and we can pay $400. The article will appear in print (circulation 250,000) and online. We are opening pitches up to writers currently living anywhere, though Hannaford has stores in Maine, Massachusetts, the Albany/Hudson Valley areas of New York, Vermont, and New Hampshire, so ties to that area or to the store itself are a bonus.
