We are a prominent law firm representing injury survivors, and the families of people wrongfully killed, in Texas and nationwide. Our clients need your help to tell their stories about how their injuries and losses have changed their lives.
This freelance role involves interviewing our clients, working with them to gather illustrative photos and videos, and then writing their stories into feature-length human interest articles that we share with the defendants and insurance companies to help them understand how the clients' lives have changed. The desired work product has the tone and content of a typical newspaper or magazine human-interest feature or personal profile.
In every instance, you will be interviewing people who were either catastrophically injured or who lost loved ones in traumatic incidents. This includes people suffering from quadriplegia, disfiguring burn injuries, or whose spouses, parents, or children have died in sudden tragedies.
The typical project involves 12-15 hours of work. There is no guaranteed number of projects, but if the work product is satisfactory, we typically have at least three projects available per month.
Although we are based in Houston, Texas and would prefer local candidates who can meet in person with our Houston clients, we will consider candidates nationwide to complete these freelance projects via telephone or Zoom meeting with the interviewees, many of whom also live outside Texas.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Bilingual fluency in English and Spanish required. Most of the interviews will be conducted entirely in Spanish and will then require English work product.
- Bachelor's degree in any humanities subject (or currently enrolled in full-time journalism school) required
- Professional, published journalism experience highly preferred
- Gifted storyteller
- Uncommonly empathetic and warm personality
- Able to relate with and comfort people who are grieving and suffering
- Experienced and comfortable interviewing people about traumatic subjects
- Heart for the underdog; enthusiastic about helping people stand up to corporate America
- Serious about confidentiality. You are working under our attorney-client privilege and must keep all information, including your final work product, in complete confidence without disclosing it to anybody. Unfortunately this means that your work for us cannot be used as part of your portfolio or republished anywhere.
- Proficient in Microsoft Word, Adobe Acrobat, Zoom, email, and electronic file sharing (e.g., DropBox)
- Photography skills are a plus
