I’m now the Associate Culture Editor, which feels like a good time to share some pitch guidelines for Obsessions. Kindly use FREELANCE PITCH in the subject line when sending ideas (for Spring ‘22) stories.
For our front-of-book trends and culture section, we solicit freelance pitches for the following columns:
- The Innovator: A one to two-page profile of a chef, author, or culinary industry pro doing something especially exciting that has not gotten a ton of mainstream media attention. When pitching, please identify opportunities for service-driven sidebars (recommendations from the profile subject given their area of expertise, etc) or any recipe potential.
- The Ode: Voice-y first-person essays with a strong POV about a recipe, experience, ingredient, or culinary tradition. These typically run one to two pages in length, and may have the potential for a short recipe.
- Trendspotting: This column covers ingredients or products that are really enjoying a moment on grocery store shelves, Instagram, and/or menus––think cacio e pepe-flavored everything, or matcha madness. These pitches should have a relatively timely hook and be easily purchase-able or experiential for the reader.
- The Deep Dive: This column includes reported two to three page essays that dig into a particular place, community, or experience, like a farm that is using a particular technology to serve an underrepresented community, or a group of chefs coming together for a service-driven pop-up series.
Rates: Begin at $1/word but vary based on the scope of the assignment.
Please direct pitches to the section editor.
