I am now taking pitches/submissions. These guidelines give a sense of what I'm looking for and examples of pieces I’ve edited for the magazine. It's lengthy, but hopefully it contains all the info you'll need.
Broadly speaking, I’m excited to commission essays that balance personal narrative with sharp cultural analysis. I love to see a writer attending carefully to sources, texts, and contexts to clarify—or complicate—the story of themselves.
I am also open to fiction! What I’m about to say holds for nonfiction, too, but: in short stories, I’m attracted to a strong sense of voice and narrative arc (the latter is always important regardless of genre).
I’m omnivorous in terms of subject, but always vibe with writing that explores the texture of contemporary life with an eye to broader stakes/context.
I'm also perpetually keen on housing, home, and identity, all interpreted as capaciously (or narrowly) as you like.
Submissions are preferred but pitches work, provided they’re detailed and give a strong sense of the arc. Finished pieces run to ~2000 words and all contributors are paid.
To preempt a few questions:

Rates are negotiable and vary based on the piece (whether it's straightforward personal essay, or incorporates research/sources/reporting). But they generally start around $200 USD.
