Newsletter Writer wanted (careers) | ~10-17 cents per word
Added 2021-05-17 19:15:15 +0000 UTCCOMPANY/PUBLICATION: UNCUBED
This is a paid, part-time, and long-term freelance writing opportunity.
Do you remember feeling lost during your job or internship search? Maybe you still do? Well here’s your chance to help college students - and perhaps also yourself! - through the process.
Intel is a weekly newsletter from Mediabistro's sister company, Uncubed, that helps college students pursuing tech careers stay up-to-date on all things tech, career, and taco (you read that right).
WHO WE’RE LOOKING FOR:
- Someone who loves writing about tech, tech careers, and other tech topics
- Someone who can inform, entertain, support, and empower college students
- Someone who’s interested in being the weekly voice of Intel for the foreseeable future, rather than only contributing periodically
EACH WEEKLY EDITION OF INTEL COVERS:
- Entry-level tech jobs and internships
- Tech career advice
- Interview tips & practice resources
- Relevant news
- Taco-related content
LENGTH:
- ~350 - 550 words per week/newsletter
- Short and punchy, while still being valuable and informative
- Save space and increase engagement by linking to other resources
FREQUENCY & SCHEDULE:
- We ask that you deliver your first draft every week no later than 5 PM ET on Monday - whether that means 10 PM ET on Sunday, 9:17 AM ET on Monday, or 4:59 PM ET on Monday
- Every Tuesday, a member of our editorial team will review, copy edit, and provide any feedback about your first draft
- Usually this Tuesday edit results in a final draft that is ready for production and publication, but a round of edits may be required from you on Tuesdays as we ramp up together
- Every Wednesday, a member of our editorial team will publish the newsletter to our audience; you don't have to do anything for this part
VOICE & AUDIENCE:
- Intel’s audience is primarily made up of college students pursuing tech careers
- Mostly computer science, engineering, data science, and related majors
- ~70% undergrad
- Think about what would keep you opening and reading an email
- Have fun, and invite readers to join you in that fun
- Students have compared Intel to:
- “Clippy but like in a good way” (the highest praise 🙌), Neil deGrasse Tyson, Satya Nadella, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Wendy Williams, Ellen, and “prob Spiderman or something lmao” (?)
- We’ve also been compared to Jack Dorsey, Elon Musk, and Jeff Bezos, but we’re honestly not sure if those were compliments or insults.
COMPENSATION:
- $60 per newsletter (~$3,000 per year) to start
- Potential for bonuses if/when newsletters are sponsored
ADDITIONAL PERKS:
- Guidance and mentorship from Uncubed editorial staff and executives
- Have your words read by tens of thousands of people
- Very flexible hours and schedule (as long as first drafts are submitted on or before Mondays and any required edits are made on Tuesdays)
HOW TO APPLY:
- Upload the latest version of your resume in PDF format
- Don’t worry about a cover letter. Answering these 3 questions will be far more helpful for us and hopefully far more fun for you:What has been your experience in searching for and applying to tech jobs and internships?
Which websites and resources have you used in your tech job or internship search?
Why do you want to help college students with their job or internship search? - Upload 2-3 relevant writing samples
